why do you need adjustable lifters with an aftermarket cam ?

it's been asked before , and i think i may have done so myself . but i am getting back around to my 53 and i was just curious . if i understand what i am reading , outside of easy valve adjustment , the only reason for them is if you run a reground cam as it reduces the lobe base circle , right ? i am considering 2 different cams besides my 8cm's , one the tilden 8cm plus if i ever hear it gets ground , and one from camcraft that has real good intensity numbers etc. i want to run the oe lifters if i do , but want to make sure they're cool with a new , not reground , cam from the aftermarket . so school me again guys as i have let it slip out of my thoughts ....................:)

I would think that if you installed a reground cam, and used orig lifters your valve stems may be too short. On the other hand, if you installed a performance cam with higher lift, shortning the valve stems to get the correct clearance, may be getting too close to the keepers.

hmm thanx for the input . more too thnik of . i got a set of valves out of the early 4.6 that are measuring out nicely and have the right head diameter tha i'm wondering if they wont work with oe's and an aftermarket cam . problem is though i gotta find some one to put a bronze sleeve in the guides to make them right for the smaller stem size diameter so ..... i will find out why the run 'em , and i dont want to mill the valve stems down to any degree to make it work . i geuss i oughtta stop trying to reinvent the wheel ...............:-X21
