A friend of mine had to replace that piece on his van. Came out and cut a section off a parts van I had out back. He welded it in with the windsheild rubber still in his van. He did a good job. He posted his progress on Vintage-van site.

wiper cowle
that used to be part of a commercial air conditioner.the guy who gave me the van works with a rigging co. and was able to get me bunch of 18 ga. side covers for body skin. i had to buy a sheet of 16 ga for the floors. i rolled that out on a combo of angle iron, pipe and a 3/16" punch, a pick hammer and crummy 15# harbor frt. anvil. (kinda looks it too) if i don't destroy it welding it in i'm hoping a thin layer of lead will cure its craters.

The 4bbl carb you have is something I have thought of doing to my Econo truck. But I do not relish the idea of building a new doghouse sides to fit the carb and intake on the motor. It would also affect the mounting for the seat on the passenger side.
How has this worked for you since you last posted.? |
seat
i had to move the seat but it was easy. 2 length's of 1"x 1"x 1/8" angle iron run front to rear allowed me to move the seat up about 1" the carb will require a banjo fitting for the fuel line. i have the original side but need to either pick up another hood and cut it up or make a hood. i want to preserve the stock parts just in case.

seat placment
yeah about the earlier comments. been working the body for sometime now (in my spare time) finally closed in the engine. pained me to do it but i never got around to getting another hood so i cut the one i had. came straight out from the sides. this was more of an interference than i expected. closed up was ok but could not swing the arch to open the hood had to make another longer adapter that placed the seat about 3" forward still enough leg room but in hind sight my side cover should have been angled back about 30 degrees. would still have room for the carb. and maybe have the seat in the normal position or back to the previous adapters. had to get a banjo fitting from edelbrock that is a 90 deg. pipe with AN-6 fitting that ran along the bottom of the carb. got another an-6 to a barbed adapter that is also 90 deg to turn up (was running into the head) and clamped a hose to that.
before i start to drive it a i need to make a heat shield to protect the whole set up from the headers, never simple. |
