Hello,
I'm new round here but Ive found myself reading so much on these forums that I would go ahead and post what I'm working on.

It is a 54 f100. The body looks "ok" to start with I have rust problems with the cab corners, cowls, rockers, and doors. Lately I've been stripping everything out of the truck. Sometime in the 70s someone must have rebuilt it and did a rather shoddy job at it. Lots of body filler and attention to detail wasn't very important. Anyways The rear fenders and front fenders were replaced with fiberglass. and a lot of the cab corner work led to even more rust over the years. Either way, I'm nowhere close to working on the body yet. It has a dismantled 351c:-huh and a c6 transmission.

Currently I've got the front body section and the bed removed In preparation for the suspension upgrade. I am awaiting our engine hoist and a mustang 2 kit.

Thanks for checking my project out.Attachment 202186Attachment 202187Attachment 202188

Now that's how you introduce yourself. Welcome to FTE.
I look forward to seeing your progress.
That is a 55 grill though....Did it get swapped out sometime?

Aarons54f100 03-03-2012 05:00 PM

Yeah, the grill is a 55 but the title and vin is 54. I suppose whoever put fiberglass fenders on the truck put that grill on. I like it a lot though! :-X21 So im going to keep it that way. I will probably use the 55 hood decals as well.

Oh and I forgot to mention. Im going to pick up a 9 inch rear end tomorrow out of a 70s Lincoln? Ill post a picture of that when I get it.

Great project you got there! I like the 55 grille alot better than the 54 so I'm with you on keeping it. The 55 and 56 hood emblems were the best looking too....good idea on using the 55's.

Good luck on the project and have fun with it. Keep us updated!

One thing I am interested in later down the road is this fiberglass dog house. I like the idea of it being lighter. The front right fender and gravel pan are ruined, as you can see in the picture, and the hood is in bad shape. Its louvered and missing the hinge mounts so i would want to replace it as well. Im stuck between finding steel fenders a new hood and hood hinges or ... The dog house idea seemed like a good solution. Has anyone seen this done or have any experience with it?

Welcome to the forum...looks like you will it right in.

Welcome to the Forums! Looks like you've got a great start and a pretty decent canidate to start with!

I know fiberglass can be a PITA at times, but since your truck is wearing some now, why not just replace the one fender and the lower apron with 'glass ones again? Might even be able to find a 'glass hood if that's your fancy. I'm more partial to steel, but good used original tin is gettin harder to find 'cheap' and you'll need deep pockets for the reproduction stuff too. Fiberglass stuff may be cheaper (not sure) but I'm sure it's very readily available these days.

Hey Aaron,
Welcome aboard! Hope you missed all the storms this week!
Nice truck - So what Mustang II Kit did you go with? You look like you have a good plan. We used an 8.8 inch rear axle out of a 2001 Explorer - got some nic edisc brakes & 3.73 gears - but had to change wheels to accomodate the different hubs.

Welcome! I too am beginning the process of building a 54. I look forward to keeping up with your progress.

The mustang 2 kit is the hub to hub stage 2 from fatman fabrications. It was tough deciding between them and heidts. I'm still looking at my options for the rear suspension.

I forgot to mention it earlier but my worst fear in the project so far is the seam on the cab roof. Above the rear window there is rust along the seam and some bb size holes through the metal. On the inside of the cab the lip that runs along the seam is completely rusted. I haven't found a patch panel anywhere online for this section so it may have to be fabricated. If so Im likely to just cut the entire seam out from cap post to post about an inch above and below the seam and work in a seamless patch, which I think would look better anyhow. But that is months and months away.

The '55 I had was rusted out like that. Always wondered how and why that would happen there? I've heard of others having this same problem, surprises me that a patch panel isn't offered. Be sure to post up pics when you go to repair it, would be useful to others that run into the same issue. :-X22
