yes i noticed this site is LOADED with very useful information.. im loving it and im learning so much !

I currently have an 89 f250 with a 302 and an AOD trans thats shot... im going to attempt to rebuild the trans myself. i looked into swapping in a c6 but then ill be spending more money then i want to..
wish me luck on my project this will be a first for me! any advice or suggestions are more than welcome!

Hey thanks a lot Gerry! Thats real nice of you to offer...

Well yesterday morning on my day off I was able to get the transmission and transfer case out of the truck and into my workshop...

3rd gear is completely gone and the transmission has over 160k on it, so I figured just over haul it and NOT cut ANY corners. The transfer case operated fine, but it did leak a little so I'll be replacing some seals and the fluid of course.

I have been doing a lot of research and it does not seem like a real tough transmission to work on, so I'm confident I can re-build it. I have a nice clean and organized work space so nothing should get misplaced.

I was planning on purchasing a "master re-build kit" on ebay but I don't know if the quality is any good,(borg-warner clutches) and if it really is COMPLETE... they're selling for $175 here is the link:

Any suggestions on what brands to look at?, and are there any decent upgrades of some kind that would be worth investing in? This truck will be used to haul my toys around for the most part, (cars / quads / motorcycle) and the occasional trip into the woods for camping. (no serious off roading at all!)

Also, the torque convertor- I was reading up on the torque convertor and some people are suggesting to swap the factory with an upgraded one? (saying there are ones available that are not as harsh on shifting?) Is something like this worth upgrading? Should i just replace with a factory unit? Or can i get away with flushing the torque converter I currently have and re-using it?

Lastly, I'm trying to source a nice informative repair manual. I keep seeing Haynes but I'm not crazy about them for some reason, any other suggestions? I do have Alldata but I don't know if that will include every bit of information I'll be needing...

Borg-Warner stuff is great, no problems there,
Thats a good price for the master o/h kit,
For what your doing a ''reman'' torque from your local shop should be fine,
''Reman''ufactured with a 1 yr guaranty usually,
Its the heat that kills trannies so a good cooler is a must,
For a repair manual Haynes is OK but a Ford shop manual is better,
Try your local Ford dealer & talk to the tranny tech there, he may have a book to GIVE you, or borough it...
alot of the manuals are on CD now

3rd gear is famous for letting go in those AODs, its the last clutch pack you come to as you tear it appart.......

What did I miss?????

If the tranny moved ahead & reversed allright when its cold that tells me the torque is fine, if it has a drain plug just drain it, dont run any varsol thru it,
if there is no drain plug, just lay it with the neck down over a pan & it will drain like that overnight

Before you put the tranny back in, blow out the cooler lines with your compressor........

Cleanliness inside the tranny is a must too, dont use a rag to wipe parts dry, all that lint can cause problems too, after washing the parts in varsol or whatever let them drain on news papers or a clean spot then blow them off, G

To hold the washers & bearings in place when installing them use vasoline, it will desolve when the tranny fluid warms up

Im going to go ahead and order that overhaul kit listed above and let my current torque converter drain "neck down over a pan" for the duration of my re-build.

Ill consider adding an aftermarket cooler that offers better/more cooling to be on the safe side

Thanks for the tips on assembly, vasoline is a great idea and I will definitely let the parts dry on some newspaper along with the help of some compressed air.

WW, to check the neck on the torque just run your fingers over it where the pump bushing rides, if its not smooth it will have to be replaced, if its perfect then clean it up with very FINE emery paper, even used fine emery cloth is good...........

Maybe a tranny temp gauge might be an option........

Gerry a temp gauge is a great idea. I'll be installing one for sure, and I'll check my torque converter tonight hopefully it's reusable.
