4x4 dummy
Just bought a 1976 ford f250 extended cab its manuel with a 390 tried using 4x4 got stuck don't know how to engage it don't know nothign can someone tell me step by step on how to properly useit. Am I suppose to shhift it up or down?

Did you lock the hubs..... turn the things on the ends of the front axle? After that you just put your shifter in 4X4, and if you can't get the lever to move, flick the clutch a little and the gears should drop in.

so the hubs will be on the ends of the fromnt axle? should the shifter be up or down ?what lever ?

and stuck meaning go t stuck in the sand the only tire rotating was back passenger sidetire ..and u sure they made hubs on the 76 model ?

The hubs are the parts of the front axle that stick out in the middle of the tires. I'm all but positive that 76's had them..... but I've never owned one.
And by lever, I just meant shift lever, the 4wd shifter. The shifter's position will depend on what transfer case you have, which I believe is what Stinky was leading into above. |

Turn your hub locks on your front axle hubs to LOCK (this locks the front axle into 4wd) then go inside your truck; put your gear selector in NEUTRAL; next put your transfer case into 4LO or 4HI then off you go (sometimes you might have to reverse for it to lock in the trasfercase). To get back into 2WD you can go out and put your hub locks back into FREE then go put your gear selector in NEUTRAL ; then put your transfer case in 2HI then you might have to reverse as I recently stated.
You can leave your hubs locked if you plan on getting into any mucky stuff later on the day (such as your driving on the highway then you plan to go into the mud) you will have to swtich your transfer case back into 4x4 though (Don't drive on the highway with the 4x4 engaged on the transfer case). I've done it before but it steers differently because the front is pulling. 205 transfer cases are full time 4x4 |
