how to tighten shift linkage?

well, i had a bad habit, resting my hand on the shifter... it is soooo sloppy now,and it wont even go into 1st now.. we manually put it into 1st, so the trans is not the problem... do i have to put a new cable in? or something in the column to tighten.....??? searched, couldnt find anything.

in other news, finally replaced my steady bearing.. a lot LESS road noise now.! used a press to get it off.

to do:
-shift linkage
-trans fluid flush& filter
- front diff fluid change
-new front calipers
-new flex plate
-front steering stablizer

There are a few things you can check before replacing first would be the torx screws, they are pretty common to loosen up.

You can also adjust the linkage

PRND2L Linkage Adjustment

And to adjust the pointer there is a thumbwheel to adjust

Pointer Adjustment

Then the actual shifter tube would need replacing if these could not correct your issue.

Learned about all of it on this forum, so this forum is AWESOME. Just passing along the information. I bet your issue is the torx screws though, mine use to loosen up about once a month until I medium strength loctited them in place.

are those torx screws inside the cab? underneath the panel under the steering wheel? really hard to tell

BigAlsPSD 02-21-2012 11:35 PM

Yes if you are laying in the floor top of your head against the pedals looking basically straight up they are there, tough to find, but once you know they are there, you can find them every time.

Sometimes I have to slightly move the shift lever to start the truck. Would tightening these screws possibly fix that too?

BigAlsPSD 02-22-2012 12:47 AM

Simplest possibility there is.

VRC9170 02-22-2012 12:50 AM

I will try it tomorrow. Where would we all be without FTE?
