Fuel leak at back of engine on 1994 7.3 IDI
 

Hey PRO'S!
I have a 1994 7.3 IDI 'K' engine in my crew cab dually. It has 90,000 miles.
Problem: I have a fuel leak at the back of the engine which is nearly a steady stream dripping on the starter side of the block. I replaced the rear injector which was leaking a small amount, but this by no means has stopped the leak.
We checked all the fuel lines as well as the pan and lines at the pump. Everything is dry, no leaks. I did find another injector began leaking, but only a very small amount. Not enough to account for the amount of fuel dripping.
What puzzles us is that if I shut off the engine and then restart it, many times the leak will stop until I start it the next time. It almost seems as though there is a switch with an electric magnet that is 'activated' by turning the key off and then back on. But I don't see or know of any such switch on the back of the engine. Sometimes shutting the key off and then back on doesn't help, sometimes it does.
Any ideas as what I need to check next?

I'd bet It's comping from the valley pan drain ...

Fuel is very difficult to see, clean it, dry it, feel with your hands.

It's likely return lines or IP seals.

Like I said in the other thread, place a piece of paper under the IP, clean and dry all the injectors and return lines.

Run the motor, then feel for leaks.

If you haven't done the return lines, I would suggest doing them anyways. It fairly cheap to do. Especially if it's hard starting after it's been setting over night.

I just went to the Pensacola Diesel website and ordered the Injector Installation kit. Since I live east of Tampa, it should be here in a couple of days.
I will super clean the pan tomorrow and wait for the kit to come and then see what happens.

I recommend Viton o-rings as well ... Like: Viton Return O-Rings - McMaster-Carr Item 9464K24

They hold up much better.

That being an IDIT, I do not like the return layout on them, the factory return layout leaves the #7 Injector dead headed without return fuel flow.

I prefer the 7.3 IDI layout.

also pay close attention to the return line that goes down the back of the block back to the selector valve.
