Browning, (Actually SPICER) 4 over 4 transmission
 

I'm parting out an old IH Loadstar dump truck, gas powered v8. It has a Browning 4/4, I ran the truck and played with the gears. the Browning seems to work fine. I have ideas on using it myself, but would like to know what it's worth if I should sell it. Anyone know? Thanks. Dan

If it has an overdrive they're in demand, but not so much if it's all under. Are there any tags or names and number on it? That could help determine with it is and what it's worth.

I Haven't seen or looked for tags or labels up under there. I do know that when I put the primary tranny in 1st and the Browning in 1st, it creeps pretty slow. Going through the range, It rather stalls in the tall gear, too high to start out with the front tranny in first.

I'll play with it some more before actually completely disabling the truck. Thanks for the input. Dan

There should be a tag on it to denote what model it is. Something like Spicer 6041? or whatever it might be. Using that part number, you can find out the ratios.

Most times they are worth saving and worth something to guys in the bigger truck world. I'm guessing it's a small version, so best only for lighter duty trucks, but you never know.

what model truck and the engine is it a 392 ?

It's on an International Loadstar. I'm guessing early 70s. No VIN, tags. builders plates, nothing. I don't know the engine size, other than it's a gas V8. The truck is a big heavy one, tandem rear and 20 inch rims. Note the cobbed on Mack rear suspension, axles. You can see that it originally had Hendrickson setup by the marks on the frame.

The 4/4 may have been a later mod too, as the mount for it is home made looking, with cutting torches edges. I'll post more later when I can get a good look at the Browning.

that ole hoist looks like it still works , should be worth its weight in gold !

What engine was in there?

Could be a 345 or 392 depending on how it was ordered. Likely it was just a 4 spd, but the "brownie" was added to give it more power options when working in the mud.

Anyones guess is as good as mine on the engine size. The firing order info stamped into the valve cover indicated it could be used on this V8 as well as IH 4 cylinder.

I have plans for the hoist, for sure! Also, I put some fluid into the power steering pump reservior, and the PS started working. I hope this pump can be adapted to my Ford C-700, it's PS doen't work, and MAN is it a bear to steer unless it's moving along.

I got a better look at this tranny. It is in fact a Spicer, model no 6041. 2 under drives, one over drive, and one even speed. The overdrive is about 15-20 % over, as close as I can tell.

Not sure yet. Could sell it, but I have a few ideas too. My brother put a Cummins 5.9 in his Ford F-250, plus one ton front wheels, hubs and a dually rear axle. The cummins has a 3 speed auto + OD, (as in Dodge) I wonder if this Spicer could have a practical application there. (I'm supposed to be getting that truck).

A friend told me I ought to hold on to the IH engine too, sez they can be worth something even as rebuild cores. Anybody know anything about that?

Not sure about the IH engine, but I can't imagine parts are getting easier to find for them. If you have the space, might be worth hanging onto.

I have a spicer 6041 behind a fuller 5306 6sp, 94 5.9 cummins in a 56 f600

6041 ratios 2.14, 1.24, 1.00, .86

The spicer will work great with the cummins
