With You in Spirit.

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. Having to say goodbye to a loved one is never easy. Even in the midst of tragedy, however, we are never without hope. Jesus reminds us, "I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in my though he die, yet shall he live." John 25:11.

The weekend before Liz passed, I started to replace the valley pan gasket. Hoping that would fix my oil leak. (Well at least part of it.) My truck has been sitting for a while. But, we will now most likely sell our house and move in with Nelson to care for him. He has a nice shop but it has a gravel floor. As soon as we get my nephew's bass boat out of there I will move "Minnie Rachel". She was named recently. That is Liz's mother and the wife of Mark whom I purchased the truck from.

So, this weekend I put it back together. It went much easier than I thought. The valley cover went in easy. I was expecting to fight with that for a long time.

I did have one setback. My temp sender broke. I need to pull it to make sure I get the right size. It will have to be ordered since it is 6 volt. That could be why it wasn't working.

Here is my valley cover. You can see where I has some water leakage. It looks like oil was coming out the back bolt hole.

Valley pan looks good, but some pushrods look a bit dirty. I didn't examine them. Is that an issue?

It's a good idea to start these from the engine bay when you do work like this. Otherwise I wouldn't have seen that I didn't get the fuel line tightened enough. Gas was spraying out the fitting. Tightened a little more and it was fine.

Now I will be ready to haul stuff as needed when we start moving. Although, I should get that heater hooked up.....

Whoa! We’ll I guess that’s one way to solve the taking care of FIL. MAYBE you should pour some concrete in the shop.}>
Looks like you got it back togeather. Just in time for a true workout.

Wow, a move will keep you busy for a while! How far is it from your house? How far from your work? Same school district?

A new shop/garage for Minnie! Until you get the floor concreted put thick mil polyurethane done to keep moisture out.

Glad to see you back working on your truck Joe. It is a great outlet for healing. Taking care of your wife's father will be a challenge but it is awesome you are willing to do it. Not just anyone would do that. You will enjoy the new open space of the country. I wouldn't mess with concreting the floor in the shed, I would just build a new shed and start fresh}>}> How far is this place from your work? You know I have a strong back, so if you need any help moving let me know!

Thanks guys. It is a stressful time. Gwen is struggling a bit and it really ties us down. She is getting a little stir crazy, but we will find a new normal. We are determined to keep him home and it will be up to us with a little help from our nephew when he can get down here. He is a huge help, but he lives 3 hours away.

The house is less than a mile from our house, so there won't be much change there. Gotta go lots of cleaning and we have to figure out where to put our stuff in an 1850's Victorian that is fully furnished.

I've been working on the shop. It's a mess. I'm way more organized than my FIL and nephew. I just asked Nelson and he thinks it is a 24X32. I will enjoy the room.

Dave, you are welcome any time. We have our volunteer fire department 1/4 mile from the house. Maybe we can set up you giving a training class and make it a work paid trip. :) We also have lots of bedrooms at the moment.

Here is the house. The building in the back is the 2 car garage and the shop is right behind that. I'm excited about using my truck to move stuff. Any excuse to work Minnie.

That is a neat old house! And a 2 car garage and a shop! Where is the farm located where your truck was sitting for so many years?

Harrier 10-28-2017 09:48 PM

The farm is 3 hours north near Chillicothe Missouri. Our nephew, Andrew, and his family live up there now. He is working to become a farmer and just started a community shared agriculture business. Kind of a co-op for organic farming. He will be able to come down for a day or two a week until soybean harvest time.

I guess I also need to go out to the garage and take a picture of the 1940 Minneapolis Moline tractor in the garage....tomorrow.....

Joe, it looks like you have two temperature sending units in that head. Have you tried the larger of the two, I believe it is aftermarket?

bjmayberry2 10-29-2017 11:33 AM

Joe can’t you just clean it up and solder it? It will get you by until your new one comes in.

Ray I think the broken piece is sitting on top of a head bolt.

Know what, bj, I believe you're right on the broken piece. Except that would most likely be a bolt into an open hole going into the push rod chamber. The bolt, that if left out will allow oil to be thrown out at road speeds.
Joe, you might try pushing that electrical connector onto the temp sending unit contact post and forget about that broken off part. It may work.

bjmayberry2 10-29-2017 12:22 PM

I stand corrected Ray. And yes leave that bolt out and you’ll get a lube job you weren’t expecting.}>

And if the bolt is too long, the push rod will get an unwanted shape.}>
