Automatic Transmisson Flexplate for 5.8 4R70W

As some of you know, I have been planning a 5.8 swap for my truck. I know its been a while. Thanks to strokin'_tatsch, I may have a 96 351W to use as the base of my build.

The 5.0 is still running well at almost 300,000 miles now. I've had other projects come up and so on. Anyway, I'm looking for the proper flexplate for my engine swap.

I need to clear a few things up. Here is what I know so far. I need one with a 28 oz imbalance to match the 351w harmonic balancer. I have been told that one for a mid to late 80s Crown Vic with 5.8 and AOD will work. I'm guessing the 28.2 oz ones are the actual weight of the 28 oz flexplates.

I've looked some online. I see Orielly's offers this Pioneer one FRA205. It says its for a 5.8 Crown Vic.

When I looked on Summit Racing, I found multiple ones. I need to know how many teeth it needs to have. Is it 157 or 164? I'm thinking its 164. I see the 157 count ones listed as 29 oz imbalance.

Does anyone know an actual Ford part number for one? I think I might prefer to try to go that route, and stay away from China mades ones. I'm not sure, but I think the Pioneer one could be. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I know there are high dollar ones out there, I don't think that will be necessary. I don't want to skimp on the flexplate though. I wan't one that will last as long as my OEM one thats in the truck now. Does anyone have any suggestions on which one to get and have a part number?

Whats the 4R70W torque convertor bolt pattern? I see 10.5 and 11.5 inches as possibilities.

Anyone know?

paul must be on vacation. I think he said to use a flex plate from a crown vic,but I can't remember the years,it might be in a search.

TexasGuy001 02-15-2012 07:54 AM

That is what Conanski said.

I'd just like to verify part numbers. I found that Pioneer brand at Oriellys.

When looking up a late 80s Crown Vic on Summit the search results are a bit confusing.

I'm also just wondering if a used Ford one would be better than a new replacement one.

88 crownvictoria flexplate running a 5.8/AOD is all you need. $60 at most autoparts stores last time i checked.

All AOD flexplates are 164 tooth count and 14.23" in diameter. I see a Ford part number of E0AZ-6375-A for a late 80's to early 90's Crown Vic w/5.8 and AOD. I assume (ick) the AOD flexplate is the same as the 4R70W. I know the latter is an electronic version of the mechanical AOD. I do not have first hand experience with the swap.

When it comes to FoMoCo, you cannot assume anything. For example, take a look-see at all the E0AZ-6375-A applications. :-missingt

E0AZ-6375-A (replaced C5AZ-6375-T) .. Flexplate ~ Myriad 1965/96 FoMoCo vehicles / 1965/68 289 / 1968/96 302 / 1970/74 351C 2V & some 1969/96 351W's (depends on applications) / 1965/83 C4 / 1969/85 FMX / 1980/95 AOD.

F6AZ-6375-BA .. Flexplate ~ 1996/ Crown Vic/Mercury Grand Marquis / 4.6L 4R70W (except Police Cruiser).

That's cool. Do you know if yours is a Pioneer FRA205?

Thanks for the additional verification of what to get.

Thanks for finding a Ford part number RLA2005 and NumberDummy.

I think I'll try to source one of those OEM ones. Depending on price and availability, Ill go with the Pioneer.

just checked my old invoice, and I did use the pioneer FRA205

Thanks for looking. Thats great to hear. Its good to know the actual part number of one being used in this swap.

Seeing as our trucks are almost identicle except for the two additional drive wheels, LOL, I would appreciate any other tips you might have for doing this swap. I may have some other questions.

Just curious, is your 5.8 completely stock, or does it have heads and or cam upgrades etc?

Off topic, but I did not know that the 4R70W was used in any 4wd trucks. I had thought about converting mine to 4wd, but thought that the E40D was the only automatic used in 4x4s. Maybe someday I will convert it after all.
