Block Heater Power Consumption

I was just curious how much power the block heater uses.

chicagodragon 02-10-2012 07:15 PM

so did i, i put an ampmeter on mine and got just under 7 amps. about 840 watts

Ken_C 02-10-2012 07:20 PM

I think theyre 1000 watts.

bashby 02-10-2012 08:09 PM

This was discussed a while back, someone said the oem was 1500 watts and aftermarket was 1000, but the 1500 wasnt confirmed. If you're wondering how much it costs to keep it plug in it works out to around 10 cents per hour in most parts of the country.

960 Amps ....

chicagodragon 02-10-2012 11:30 PM

960 amps?!?! Must be a mis-type? I think rail cars in new York use less than that.

Block heater

have a timer on mine. I usually set it for3 hours before iI need to leave. It keeps the costs down but has enough time to warm the block.

Doc

its about $0.08 an hour for me. I leave it plugged in most of the time if its less than 32° outside. I have a pretty random schedule and I just like to be ready go at all times.

Very interesting.. I have always wondered... Especially with CowMilker there! .08 an hour.. Hmmm...

I have stock tank heaters that use the same juice! LOL

chicagodragon 02-14-2012 09:44 PM

yea...do tell :-X18

I just use a power timer thing rated for 10 amps.
When I plug er in at night I set it to come on 4 or 5 hours before I gotta get out to start it before work. If its REALLY cold I leave her on most the night.

"Stock tank heaters" -- heaters for stock tanks (i.e. watering animals), not (fuel) tank heaters that are stock. One of those things where even punctuation won't help you.

$0.08 / hr is a very good rate. We pay $0.15 / kWh (which, given the BH draws exactly 1000W equals $0.15 / hr), so a timer pays for itself pretty quick.
