First oil change on the 5.0 truck
 

Hit 2k miles earlier this week, and changed the factory oil. I found that changing oil on the 5.0 is a much simpler task than the EB was. Oil plug is in a much better spot to get at, and the oil dosen't shoot out all over the guards/frame like it did on the EB.

I was hoping the drain for the filter might be a bit better than it was on the other truck, but NOPE. That is one part of these trucks that Ford really botched. I had the truck in my shop, nice a level, and when I pulled the filter, I got a little dribble out the front of the built in "filter funnel", and a gush out the backside! Nothing worse than big oil splotches on your nice shop floor! :)

Aside from that, I didn't realize until I double checked the manual for oil capacity....the 5.0, with a new filter takes 8 quarts! (capacity in the manual reads "7.7 quarts") Glad I grabbed a case.

Having had both the EB and the 5.0, and although my view may be slanted because of all the issues I had with the EB, I really like this 5.0. On a trip earlier this week (4 hours each way), the truck pulled 20.3 @ 70mph.....and once during the trip, I had to pass a log truck with a pup on a long straight stretch....and didn't realize how fast I was going until the truck started slowing itself down. I glanced down at the speedo and was at 105mph!:o Not sure just how fast I was going when it hit the speed limiter, but it seemed like nothing.

I've been thinking about a tuner once this truck hits 5k miles.....I spoke with Mike at 5-Star a couple of weeks ago, and he told me that his 5.0 with 3:55s is pulling 23-24 highway and 17-19 city with his performance tune......just makes me wonder if a tuner might be worth the money....especially if the price of fuel does what they are predicting this summer ($5+ per gallon). Thoughts?

Anyway, I'm really please with this truck, just wish the first one would have worked out this well.

Regarding oil drain, on my 5.4 I will probably put on a Ford 90-degree oil filter adapter (I have this on my 66 'Stang with Boss 302 that requires it due to custom headers) as it would place the oil filter flange forward and above the drain chute and avoid having oil spray and drip on the front crossmember.

I am unfamiliar with the Coyote 5.0 oil filter mount but it may be something for you to contemplate...

Me too. Glad to hear the 5.0 is a solid engine.

If you do put on the adapter, I'd love to hear how it goes and if you really like it.

I've already put the Fumoto drain valve and the 90 degree adpater would make the process even easier.

I'm waiting for my next oil change and to confirm the adapter is compatible with the mod motors. Gotta find the adapter first as I have the 'Stang engine torn down at the moment and I packed the loose parts somewhere...

Ed, that's great news this one is working so much better for you. Did you move your cap, tires, etc from your first truck to this new one? Did you get the liner sprayed on this truck too? I thought that looked like a tough truck.

Don't forget Mike's truck is one of the smaller lighter versions. I doubt my screw 4x4 would see those numbers with his tune. The gain may be there but maybe not those numbers.

A 2 mpg gain from 20 to 22 mpg with $5.00 gas would take about 17,600 miles to breakeven on a roughly $400 expenditure on program and programer.

May be worth it especially if some of the other claimed benefits of the programing are important to someone when weighed against the possible warranty complications.

After the EB truck, and finding out how that high topper impacted it, I sold that topper, and picked up basically the same topper in a cab height model. The dealer swapped out tires for me before I took the new truck. I also kept my Headwaters seat covers and the bedrug from the old truck.

I've not put the lining on this one...yet. After my experience with the EB, I want to make sure this truck is going to be a "keeper". If things keep going as they are, I'll get it lined this spring.

Interesting about the filter adapter....never thought about that....not sure it would work....the filter is nestled in between four hoses, and I don't think changing the angle would work....buy then again, never know until I investigate it more.

Good input on the tuner....It never occurred to me that Mike's truck wasn't a 4x4...but I guess it makes sense based on his location.

I've already spoken with the Service Manager at the dealership about a tuner. He told me that as long as I don't come in with a rod hanging through the hood, or something equally stupid, it would not effect the warranty. When I asked if I could get that in writing he said "Sure!". I suppose that's one advantage to having my Mrs. as the Dealership's Office Manager! :)

I was just wondering does Ford adjust speed governers based on what rear end your truck has? Or something similer.

My 2011 FX4 5.0L with 3.73's bumps the governer at 95mph.

Not that it really matters...I never drive that fast anyway. But just sparked my curiosoty.

For the most part the speed limiter is set to 100 mph or the speed rating of the tires, which ever is lower.
