Are my old (original) front end and rear end worth anything to sell?
 

I am in the process of replacing my stock front end and steering column/steering box, as well as my stock Dana rear end. It have every reason to believe they are in decent shape, but to the best of my knowledge they are the originals, so they're 60+ years old. Undoubtedly there is some wear and tear on them. Is there a market for those kinds of parts or are they junk? If there is a market, how do I know what to ask for them?

The steering column and box are re-sellable for sure. The leaf springs (front and rear) are also sought after items. But as far as the front and rear axles, they're harder to move in my opinion. I've had people actually give those to me after I've bought something else from them. It was easier to just load it up than sit and argue with them. Plus, I got a set of extra brake drums with each of them. The problem with selling that stuff (especially to a national internet market) is the shear size and weight of it. Shipping is a killer.

Yes, hot rodders and rat rodders like the steering box and column since it is easy to mount and are traditionally used parts. Mid Fifty buys 53-56 boxes for rebuilding cores, may buy F1 boxes as well thru their F1 division.? Brake parts that are in good shape can be sold.
Local restorers may be interested in the rest of your parts. See if there is a swap meet in your area.

I agree with AX and Doc. Steering box and column are not that expensive to ship. The brakes and other items are a lot heavier, but I have shipped them in the past as well. The hot-rodders are also after the backing plates, as well as the entire brake assemblies for their builds when converting to juice brakes. Front and rear springs will sell as long as they're not cracked. Brand new pair of springs is $300-400 plus shipping. A used set can probably be sold for half that price.

I've sold the following the past:

Steering box w/ or w/o column - $125
Pitman arm - $20-30
Front brake assemblies (pair) - $100-120
Rear brake assemblies w/rear axle (complete) - $100

Keep in mind that rear axles are not worthwhile to ship or to sell unless someone local is looking for one. I've had one for about 6-8 months before I got a call from a guy looking for one to put in his Model A. I was happy to get rid of it for $100 (basically the cost of the brake assemblies). It might be benefecial for you to remove the brake assemblies from the rear and scrap the rest of the rear axle.

If I were you, I'd advertise the parts for sale on the HAMB and Ford Barn. The steering box should go quick. The other parts may stick around for longer. If you disassemble everything, storing the parts longer doesn't become so overwhelming.

If your steering box is good, let the Model A guys know. They love them.

The spindles and out are all good for use in hot rods for converting to disc brakes. If you don't want to remove the spindles from the axle, at least take everything from the backing plates out. Hubs and drums included. The axle itself is not worth more than scrap value. Should be able to get $250 for the whole spindles and out set-up. The tie rod can be small value around $10 if straight and good shape.

Steering column and box is good for selling. $100-125 without much trouble if good shape and has the pitman arm. The drag link is small value maybe 410

Rearend is not worth much more than scrap, except for the brake parts. It is not a bad part, just not much demand for it. Most people use a more modern style rear that is stronger like the 9-inch.

If you ever find or see a 46-47 1/2 ton truck, those rearends are worth getting. They are open drive banjo style and have good value for hot rods converted to open drive with modern trans.

Bottom line is that almost anything off the old trucks has some value to people beyond just scrap metal value. The issue is where to find those buyers and also how much work you want to do to sell and ship stuff.

I have some of the same parts lying around I need to do something with. I'm thinking about using craigs list as I have bought and sold though it before. I just leave my phone number and set it so e-mails won't come it,stops all the spam and scammers. Or you can leave it open if you don't mind all the crap coming in your e-mail. My next choice will be swap meet then scrap yard ,or leave it behind the shop and let my kids take care of it when I'm gone,L.O.L.:)

I broke down the rear end out of my 49 F-1 into parts and sold the brakes and drums and then both axles separately. I got a couple of hundred for these parts but the differential and housing are scrap even though the differential is a good one. I kept the rear end out of my 48 F-3 for about 5 years and finally gave it away. I still have some F-1 springs and the front axle but they will probably become scrap also....:-X0A6
