Sorry for not elabriating, my buddys truck would run but after driving it the heat from the motor would basicly cook the negative cable, have you though about checking the fuel pressure the fuel pressure regulator is like 25 bucks at the auto parts

When it wont start, try to determiine if its not getting spark or fuel. Can you hear the fuel pump running? You can give it a small shot of ether and see if it runs for a couple seconds, if so you have spark. You could also remove the coil wire from the dist, hold it 1/4" or so from ground and have someone crank while you look for spark.

I should be able to hear the fuel pump correct?

Some are really quiet, when you turn the key on without cranking it should run for a few seconds to prime the system. Try that when its not acting up and you'll know what you are listening for.

so it does turn over? just wont start?

Maybe a relay? Any one know? Fuel pump isn't going

I had a similar problem last week. truck would start up for a couple seconds then stall out. to make a long and tedious story short, the hi pressure pump was working but not very well, just dribbling out the end when it should be shooting out, hence hi pressure pump. but Im not sure if thats you problem if itll run for awhile, then once you shut it off it wont run again.

That's right. Once it is started. It runs fine, which is why I'm reluctant to change out the fuel pump.
