Coolant Leak, '98 Ranger 4.0 L V6
 

Hi,

I changed the oil on my '98 Ranger yesterday and noticed a little bit of coolant on the bottom of the bell housing. It wasn't much (yet), but it was trickling down from above on the driver's side. I couldn't see clearly behind the engine on top without removing some stuff, but I could see where it looked like it was dripping onto the bell housing, ca.3/4 of the way up on the driver's side. I was able I was wondering if anyone has any idea where the leak may be and how to fix it? As I said, it's only a couple drops now, but I'd like to nip it in the bud. Thanks in advance!

Borrow a pressure tester and "inflate" the radiator to 15 psi or so. Then watch to see where the leak is coming from. Make sure it is actually coolant and not trans fluid from a clutch system or a/t cooling line. There are not many places for the leak to originate except maybe an upper radiator hose or heater hose fitting. Coolant will blow back and drop down, so where you notice the drips is not likely to be the cause of the leak. I firmly do not recommend using barsleak or some type of stuff you add to the radiator.

Intake leak? I will strongly 2nd not using stop leak, at least not such crap as Bars leaks pellets. The guy who owned my ranger did that and I think either rust or that has clogged a passage in the block someplace. Next month I'm gonna tear into it. I haven't borrowed a tester yet, but I had a good thorough look from under the engine and from the top. The coolant is dripping/spraying on the bell housing right where the started bolts on. I don't know what's above there, the exhaust manifold is in the way so I can't see back there. Is it most likely the intake gaskets? Thanks
