1960 f100 292/fordo with trans cooler with lines into block of motor? What to do?
 

Ok I have a 1960 f100 with a 292 y block and ford o matic trans. I pulled the old motor out because it was on its last leg. Well the old trans has a cooler on the side of it and hard lines that go into the block of the motor where the water jackets are. The new trans I am pretty sure its air cooled. Which one to go with?

I'd go with the air cooled.

Hello - this is funny because I had the same thing on my '67 when I pulled the tranny years and years ago. It had cooler lines routing coolant back to a box thing on the side of the tranny. I'd never seen anything like that.

I chose to plug the holes in the block and run the tranny fluid up to a B&M cooler in front of the radiator. I ran hard lines I pulled from a truck at the boneyard. It worked just fine.

an aftermarket cooler will have two lines,one in one out.Most come with a mounting kit to mount it to your radiator.Hook up the tranny lines to it with oil cooler hose and mount it.done.

The thing is that these libes arent tranny fluid its water. Does anyone here have a diagram for this or even a part number,brand or place I can get it? Anyone here done this before and have pics?

Okay, now I'm caught up with the thread. Apologies for the double post.

What I'm talking about is changing the system from one that brings coolant back to the transmission to one that is more conventional and brings tranny fluid up to an external cooler or, more commonly, the radiator like you would see on a truck from the '70s for instance.

Is this what you want to do or would you rather keep the factory system that routes coolant back to the tranny?

I mean I would like to keep most of it original but I want it to cool well too. Is the original cooling that bad?

Vehicles have used water to oil tranny coolers for decades with no trouble. Why do you want to get rid of it so bad?

I wasnt trying to get rid of it, just trying to figure out which would be the best for what I want and need the truck for.

For just normal use I would say stick with the OE cooler. Add a temp sensor to monitor it if you are concerned or plan on towing/hauling regularly.

How would I go about installing a temp sensor? I wount be towing or hauling at all. If I were to install a trans cooler on it how would I go about doing that without changing my radiator? I am mmost likey sticking with stock just checking my options.
