2010 F250 blowing white/blue smoke
Ok guys, I am completely new to this forum and need help. I have a 2010 F250 that on 2 fight occasions has blown white/blue smoke out the tail pipes. This its my 2nd 6.4L and my 2008 never did that. I took it to the dealer and they can't find anything on the computer?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.. |
Sounds like maybe an overfuel condition.
Find another dealer and fast. |
My truck was full when that happened the second time. Don't recall on the first occasion.
|
Was it in regen when it happened? Ford claims it is "normal" IIRC, there is a thread in the 6.4L forum about it. I've had it happen once while in regen.
|
When he says "over fuel condition" hes not talking about whats in the tank. Hes talking about somthing causing the engine to put more fuel in the cyinders which causes the smoke.
Heed the warning and find a new dealer to look at it, and quick. Sarge |
Excuse the ignorance, but what type of things would cause an over fuel condition?
|
Could be a bunch of different things, Leaking fuel injectors, PCM commanding the injectors on too long, faulty coolant temp sensor, there are lots of things that can cause it.

Doing it again
Ok, my truck started blowing white smoke again this morning. Immediately stopped and smelled the tail pipe and it does not smell like raw diesel. My thought is it smells more like coolant. Brought it to the other local dealer but what should I tell them to check for?
|
Are the tail pipes sooty? I have read that they should be clean and if they show signs of soot the DPF is most likely cracked.
If it smells like coolant it could be a leaking egr cooler or head gaskets. I am not too familiar with the 6.4, but thats what happens when the egr cooler goes in a 6.0 Could a moderator move this to the 6.4 section so it gets more exposure and the op gets the help he needs? Sarge |
If the truck is stock it is going to go into regeneration cycles every now and then to clean the catalyst. There can smoke during the regen cycle. During the regen cycle basically a bunch of fuel is used to ramp up the EGT and burn off any soot or other crap in the DPF. I don't know if that is what you are experiencing or if you have another issue.

Check all fluid levels, some white smoke during a regen is considered normal. I have had it once myself.
White smoke is an indication usually of burning coolant....if not in regen. So what is your coolant doing? If you are loosing coolant then the egr valve and coolers need to be looked at. Also what about your oil. Are you growing oil or loosing it? Since you indicate some blue ish smoke it could be that as a cause as well. Also how far apart are the regens? |
Ok, when you talk about regen, I am assuming you are talking about the "Cleaning Exhaust" reading on the dash? The smoke is not coming out during that time.. And this is my 2nd 6.4L and my first never blew smoke out the tail pipes. However, my first truck did loose radiant coolant frequently and eventually cracked 2 radiators...
This truck is doing it on a regular basis and I don't believe it is normal... I dropped it off at another dealer this morning and advised them of the responses I have received on this forum on what to check for... |
keep us posted.

Moved to the 6.4L Powerstroke Diesel forum.

Good luck. If you take it into dealer and tell them white smoke during regen you are wasting your time b/c the tech will drive it out back and type in NORMAL and be done with your truck. If no codes are popping up this is what happens.
Maybe you might get a bored tech looking for something to do who will investigate it. I s/w corporate about this yesterday and hopefully my complaint will open their eyes. |
