2001 f250 four wheel drive problems

Hello new member here. This past summer my stepfather gave me his 2001 f250. It has 231,000 he was the only previous owner. The truck sat in their driveway for the past year with only a few miles put on in that time. Ive replaced the brake lines a caliper and a few other things to make it road worthy again. Sitting that long didn't help a lot of things along with western Ny winters. Anyway about the four wheel drive problems. The truck has had the original hubs replaced by warn hubs sometime in the past. They are not the problem. The problem is when I turn on the four wheel drive (dash mount switch) the orange 4x4 light comes on but it is not engaging. The same with 4 low. Neither work. When I lock the hubs in they are definitely engaged but the transfer case is not registering what to do. Anyone ever have this problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Eric

Check the fuse block for a blown fuse, and check the Tcase solenoid. It sounds like the solenoid is not engaging.

I will check the fuse panel. Where is the transfer case solenoid located? Thanks!

I'm not 100% sure (someone else please feel free to chime in) but I believe it's on the transfer case itself.

I believe your talking about the electric motor that engages the transfer case? It is located on the bottom of the transfer case, looking up at it you'll see a connector with two wires going into it, further up there is another connector with 6-8 wires I really dont remember, anyways that where its located.

You could also check to see if your relays are working, I think the only way to check is just to buy two news one, which are pretty cheap. On my 2001 5.4 v8 they were next to the fuse box under the hood. Looking straight on from the head light the relay box sat off to the left (passenger side) there is another one (at least on mine) directly in front of the fuse box which is for a trailer break system.

Thanks for the info. So as far as you know there are no relays hiding in the dash? Everything should be able to be accessed from the engine bay and beneath the truck on the t-case? Not sure if this matters if anyone else has any input but it is a 5.4 if that matters. Thanks again!

you can check it manually take off the 4x4 elec motor and see if it moves off the truck you can manually move it into 4hi and 4 low

the 2 wires that go to the motor are are forward and reverse they just reverse polarity so you can test it with a couple of leads

if you really run into problems with the elec turn it into a manual

gammatg 01-17-2012 07:54 PM

Could you be more specific about turning it to a manual?

gammatg 01-17-2012 08:05 PM

Would I have to change the entire transfer case over to the manual shift type? Or os there a short cut with the electronic motor type. Sorry for all of the questions I'm a bricklayer not a mechanic;)

you can mane the 273 into a manual shift its not that hard

you have to have some fab skills

remove the 4x4 motor setup

you will see a shaft sticking out it is kinda oblong make a shaft to fit it then on the body side the hole is there for the manual shift just get the boot and shifter

this is the brief version I am doing this in my conversion myself I did find on one of these sites someone that did this

there was someone on here that used the guts of the elec shifter welded a rod on it and used the manual for shifter it can be done not that hard https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/p...ictureid=90542

the pic shows what you will use after the elec motor assembly is removed I drilled and taped mine for a attachment bolt

Thanks. I will let you know how I make out.

Everything I've read says the relays are under the hood. I believe in expedition with a 5.4 the relays are under the dash.

Here's a picture of mine for reference

The relays to the left with the box lid off, where you can see red, is the 4x4 relays for my 01

gammatg 01-18-2012 01:13 PM

Well I started off by looking at the relays and they were both missing!!! So I went over to the ford dealer and they couldn't give me the part numbers they said they didn't have an 01 book:-roll. sc0r1a any chance you could give me the part numbers off of yours I would greatly appreciate it. I have no clue who would have and why they would have pulled them out. Thanks Eric. I would have posted a picture but I couldn't figure out how to do it.

gammatg 01-18-2012 09:22 PM

Can anyone help with the part numbers for the 2 relays pictured above?
