Exhaust Fluid System Fault
 

Hi all. I've got right about 1000 miles on a 2012 FX4 DRW King Ranch and absolutely love it.

But...

I realize this has been posted before, but I haven't seen any resolution to the issue, so I'll ask myself.

We were in Tulsa this weekend (more than 50 miles from home) looking at RVs, and I got the "Exhaust Fluid System Fault" message, telling me that I've got 50 miles left before my max speed is reduced to 50 mph. I added urea in case that was the problem - it only took a gallon or so, and the message didn't clear. I then read more in the owner's manual and decided it wasn't a level issue anyway. We contacted the dealer in Muskogee and headed that way, while the alarm went off every mile or so. After about 40 miles left, it just cleared and I haven't seen it since.

Knowing how hard intermittent problems are to fix, I decided not to leave it with the dealer. Has anyone had this, and is it possibly a one time thing? Is there any reason to let the dealer look at it?

I can pull the codes on it, but I haven't taken the time to do it yet. I plan to tonight when I get home. Is it possible to reset the mileage countdown with a code reader?

It really bothers me to risk being stranded over something so unneeded.

It should store a memory fault code. If it has one, I wouldn't clear it, but take it to dealer.

Man I hate letting someone work on my vehicles. I can't think of a time where I didn't regret it.

In this case, I thought there was nothing they could screw up by reading a code. When my previously spotless KR was deemed "ready," I got in it to discover that the bonehead had gotten grease on the seat, dash, and door panel. I went down the street to get something to clean up his mess, and while cleaning I found where he scratched the crap out of the plastic on the bottom of the seat. Why can't anyone respect my vehicles half as much as I do?

I understand that 100%. It is sad without a doubt.

I had a similar instance on my truck when i brought it home. It gave contaminated exhaust fluid message at 150 miles. Took it in and had a new nox sensor replaced. No problems since. Several have reported after getting the low message and replacing fluid, it has taken approx 50 miles to clear the code. But seeing you only added 1 gallon yours could not have been low enough to trigger. Best bet is to watch it and wait. It possible you had your first regen, and the computer had a little hiccup. Your next regen should tell whether there is an issue or not. Good luck an enjoy the truck!:-X06

Also there is a way to read DTC's by holding the bottom arrow on the left side of control wheel when turning on and releasing once self check is done. This will put you into a diagnostic mode and scroll through several screens. There should be info on all trouble codes and how to do this in the tech folder. This is a good skill to learn with the truck, there is some good information that can be viewed this way.

I had the exact same thing. It is posted here somewhere. Dealer checked a few things as instructed by ford. Nothing was ever determined to be faulty. They cleared the code and so far so good. It has probably been about 1200 miles without any issue.

I spoke with the service guy in charge today, and he was apologetic - asked me to bring it back in to see what part was scratched. I appreciate not having to fight with them to get them to take care of it. We'll see how it goes.

Dealer has agreed to replace the scratched plastic.

Got the first regen at 1133 miles.

Bad for the tech scratching it, good for the dealer for taking care of it.....

This only displays the DTC for the instruments. It will not show up anything for the engine and so on.......sorry.

I just had this problem occur today 2012 F250 SD 3000 miles, just added fluid to try and see if it would clear, but im down to 37 miles left until it says it will slow down to 50mph, I hope it clears , I had a 2011 250 sd and they replaced the pump that pushes the exhaust fluid. Im taking it to dealer tomorrow
