quick question on coolant for 99 f150
 

Hey guys, just bought a 99 f150 with 122k miles.. the coolant is low, and showing its age.. I want to do a flush fill and change the thermostat.. I don't have a manual, so I called and the ford dealer said they had a specific kind but where out of it.. and that I could use ZEREX G-05 ... well, looking online, and after talking with others.. there is some question as to if the service writer I talked to was correct.. I am told that 02 was the year it went from green to gold.. and that green is what mine came with.. now the stuff in it looks like a lightish brown...

question is, can I flush fill with the G05 ZEREX? or do I need to take it back to NAPA.. if it is good. I'll keep it and do the job. cost wasn't an issue.. just want it done right.

Green or anything green compatible. Dealers wouldn't have a clue about a now 13 year old model. I want to say that Zerex is what the newest stuff takes, which would be all the dealer is familiar with.

or green stuff.

Just use the green stuff. The Yellow stuff is just an extended life version of the green. If you replace it every other year at least, you are fine either way. Just make sure you don't put any tap water in your cooling system.

if you don't use tap water what should you use? Distilled water? My tap water is from the well with no chemicals, is that ok to use?

The 03 OM says to use the Gold stuff. Would I be Better to flush & fill with the green stuff? I don't want heater core issues.

the green was factory fill at one time, now it is yellow. As mentioned the yellow is a longer life stuff and is suppose to be better for the radiator and heater cores. Probably best to drain the green and put the new Yellow in All Fords. What you CAN NOT DO, is put DEXCOOL in the radiator. That is specifically a GM fluid and can turn your stuff to jello. Some kind of demineralized water is better for the radiator because it has not flouride or calcium in it. YOu can use well water or city water, but long term will get more buildlup in the radiator.
