16" rims om my 65 F100??
 

I got this truck from the second owner who bought it from a friend in 1966. I know he didn't change the rims and I can't imagine the original owner changed them in the ~8 months he owned the truck. The original hubcaps fit on the rims so I'm further convinced that these are original. I'm trying to find tires the right size but every post i can find says this truck came with 15" rims. Anybody???

I had the same problem. Mine came with 16s and I couldnt figure out the right size. Someone told me in a previous thread that they came with 235/75/15, but mine is an oversized 235/85/16... ^ ^ You betcha, available as an option: 1955/79 F100's, 1966/79 Bronco's and 1975/79 F150's.
1961/66 F100 2WD & 4WD: Not only were 15 & 16 inch wheels available, but so were 17.5 inch wheels (optional). All have 5 lugs on a 5.50" bolt circle.

As original, these trucks were only available with bias ply tires, cuz Ford didn't offer radials (and then as an option) until the mid 1970's, and...

The 235/75/15 & 235/18/16 tires mentioned in post #2 are P-Metric radials. NOT available for anything until the 1990's, so they could not have come on these trucks originally!

SapperJoe: Exploded any bombs recently? When I read that post where the member told you that 1965/66 F100's came with L78 x 15's originally, I said to myself WTF?

Letter Series tires were first offered in 1969, and thru 1972, the only size factory installed were G78 x 15's.

Both 16 inch "widow maker'" split and non split rim wheels were available. Both 6.00-16 and 6.50-16 tires were available.

There are two different types of non split rim wheels: Innies and outies.

Innies: So called because the hubcap snaps onto tabs located within the wheels center section.

Outies: So called because the hubcap snaps over raised tabs located on the outside of the wheels center section.

Not to hijack the thread, but are you referring to my name? Haha, if so, I was a grunt but during deployment our engineers kept getting f'ed up so I volunteered to sweep for IEDs, earning me the nickname of Sapper Joe.

Anyway, I didn't mean they came with the size mentioned in my previous post, more like thats the size in today's standard. I will post a pic of my rim on my recent thread if you could identify if it is original or not.

20 some years ago, the was a TV series that aired on US PBS stations that had originated in the UK titled: Danger UXB (UneXplodedBomb).

Sapper was originally a British term. In this series, the star of the show was a sapper who went around exploding former WWII German Luftwaffe UXB's that had rained down on London.

He was killed in the final episode.

Not to try and hi-jack the thread any further. I have 3 of the 5 lug 16" innie wheels. Im still looking for 2 more. Anyone.......:p Anyone......:p

Sapper the reason I asked was I had some good buddies that were Sappers and they had said it was tougher getting the sapper tab than it was getting their Ranger tab. Sorry about the tire info. As usual ND had the accurate info,again I got taken to school :)

The 16" F 100 wheel was only available in non split rim (1 piece solid). The 15" was the only 2 piece rim available for the F 100. In other words, the 15" 1 piece was the standard wheel, and the 16" 1 piece, 17.5" 1 piece and the 15" 2 piece were the only wheel options for the F100. The 16" 2 piece rim for the F 100 is a fantasy, does not exist no matter what your parts book say.

Not unless the wheels have been changed: Last year for "innie" 15" wheels: 1966.

Innie = The hubcap snaps over tabs located on the INSIDE of the wheels center section.

Outie: The hubcap snaps over tabs located on the OUTSIDE of the wheels center section.

Post a photo, if you can, of your "original rims/hubcaps" as that may shed light on the subject. A lot of people think their
rims/tires/caps are original, but aren't. I hunted the globe for 16inch non-split "innie rims" which take Fords "bottlecap"
hubcaps. They are as hard to find as a virgin in a brothel. Took 6 months and 3 states.

Also, these original rims were not designed to use radials, but rather tubed bias-plys. Radial rims have a safety lip on the inner
edge and I've been told by an expert wheel builder (Wheelsmith in Corona, CA) that you shouldn't use radials on these old rims
as it can potentially compromise the rims integrity...lots of guys are doing it, but it's a bad idea.

I've got radials on there now and I haven't lost one yet :) I do get a vibration at freeway speeds though. I assume (hope) that's from the radials but I've heard stiffer shocks will address that.

I posted an inquiry about dog dish caps and rims before finding your comments in this thread. I guess what I have is "innies" as you call them. 2 rims and 2 dog dish caps. Do you know any one that may need them to complete a full set? Thanks for your time,
