2002 F250 Gas V10 No Fuel Pressure Not Starting Please Help!
 

Hi everyone, I'm in need of some help. I have a F250 Super Duty 6.8L Gas V10 and It wont start. My dad asked me to borrow it to go to the store and pick something up, he came back because he forgot something and when he tried starting the truck it wouldn't start again. He thought it might have run out of gas, so I got my gas can and poured some gas in and the truck after a few tries started. He didn't need it anymore so I just parked it in the drive way. A couple of days later I got in the truck and it started up, went to the gas station put in about $50 worth of gas and then the Truck WOULD NOT Start! I killed the battery trying to start it, I tried getting a jump and no luck. Since the engine was turning over but wouldn't stay running, I got under the hood and started checking the fuel pressure, there was none so I got AAA to tow me home. Obviously the main culprit would seem to be the fuel pump, but normally there are symptoms of a fuel pump going bad, like low fuel pressure having to prime it 3-4 times before you can get it running and that is for a while before it completely just dies, at least in my experience and what I've read on the threads I found. So I Changed the fuel filter and got some fuel pressure, but not consistent or enough to start the engine, then again after priming the engine a few times no fuel pressure at all. Before I go into syphoning the gas and dropping the fuel tank to replace the pump, what else should I try?? I don't want to go out and spend $360 dollars for a new motorcraft pump when I can still try a few other troubleshooting methods.

Side Questions:
Is the Fuel Pressure Regulator a possible culprit?

There is a weird sound like something spinning or whirling (hard to describe, but it just doesnt sound right to me) for a second or so coming from the Vapor Canister a few seconds after I turn the key in the on position, is this normal?

I would say your looking at a fuel pump my friend, I think the odd sound you are hearing is the dying pump...

You really think I'm hearing the pump in the Vapor Canister all the way next to the air filter? It really sounds like it is coming from the Vapor canister not anywhere else, I'm just hoping this is not something that has gone bad or that also might need replacement

I do feel like I'm going to end up having to swap out the pump, but I want to make sure I check everything along the way before I do

I think the sound is resonating thru the fuel lines going to the vapor canister :-drink

That makes sense, I was just wondering if there was any mechanism or something where the sensor is attached that would be making that noise

I dont think their are any sensors in the vapor canister :-jammin

There seems to be a sensor at the top/back of the vapor canister next to what seems to be the return line

I have a 2004 250 with the 5.4 and I was getting a random no start, when I would hear they pump prime it would start up but if I didn't hear the pump, I had zero fuel pressure. It seemed to get worse after the first time it did it and I was able to limp it along for a few weeks but each time it would take more turns of the key to get the pump to engage. If finally died and I just changed the pump last week and it is working like a champ. the best price I found on the pump was $260 for the entire unit(the v10 might be different) on amazon. It was the pump and sending unit and it was a motorcraft part.

Thanks Marc, I'll be dropping the fuel tank tomorrow and change the fuel pump. My main question about the fuel pump is the fact that your pump seemed to die out over a period of time, which is what normally happens, mine just over night died which hopefully doesn't bring on more trouble shooting. Fingers crossed

I hear that grunt sound when I turn my key to the on position as well by the cannister. It's normal.

I just was never aware of it before and now that I heard it I was worried that something else had gone bad, I'm glad to hear its normal. Quiestion for you though did it make that noise when the vehicle was brand new or was it something that developed over time?

I bought it used back in '09 with 113k miles, so I don't know. It has been doing this since I got it.

You could go to used car dealers that have V10's and see if their's do the same thing. Folks on the Excursion forum says it does.

A little friendly advice and its your choice but I would pull the bed off....way easier.

I did that on my dad's Ram when I changed his fuel pump, I took all the bolts off except for the last two which I just loosened and lifted the front of the bed with my engine hoist that way the bed is lined up still and I didn't have to unplug anything. It took me about 30 minutes from start to finish. I would be fine to do the same on my F250 , but i kept reading in the forums not to, I do have a bed liner also if that is an issue. Did you take the bed off to replace your pump?

Thanks for checking on that for me JH i really appreciate it, I'm feeling a lot better about that now. I'm about to go change my pump and hopefully my baby will be back on the road!
