Fuel / water leak
Hello all,
so I noticed the other day that the truck smelled extra gassy, I opened the hood and revved the truck a little and saw what looks like a mixture of gas, water and maybe air squirting out of a small hole here. Is this the fuel pump? and is there supposed to be a small screw size hole open on the back of it? thanks, E |
Yes'' that is your fuel pump!!..it's bad!!!!..replace...PS, that's not water! that's gasoline' so don't drive it that way...

Carb is still getting fuel, so can I just plug the hole where it's leaking? Pump looks original though and I'm not sure when, if ever the fuel filter has been replaced. If I have to get a new one, is it something local auto stores have or is it better to get a certain kind of fuel pump from an online store? thanks again. |
Don't plug the hole! Replace pump. Next thing to happen, is diaphram will start leaking into crankcase and you will have serious issues.
|
One of 2 things will happen either the engine will seize or BOOM !!!!
|
Either replace it or wait and drive it until it makes really expensive noises like KABOOM and CRACKLE CRACKLE as the flames gobble your truck up. Yes those pumps are available at Auto Zone , Advanced, NAPA, O'rielly's etc. That hole is like the ones on your water pump, kinda like a tattle tale it lets you know it's going away and needs to be replaced.

In a new fuel pump, a rubber diaphragm works off the camshaft to pump gasoline. That hole in the fuel pump is open to the atmosphere and allows the air pressure to equalize when the diaphragm moves so you can't just plug it.
When the rubber diaphragm goes bye-bye and begins leaking, then gasoline, rather than air, will come out of that hole. It will progressively get worse and as noted above, is very dangerous. |
Gasoline will also thin the oil as it leaks in to the crankcase. Spun bearings are the result when the oil thins to much due to not repairing the pump.
