Do the 302 and 351w have the same Bellhousing and Motor mounts?
I have a 1995 Jeep Cherokee that I am looking to swap a SBF into. The only swaps I can find online are 302s. I was under the impression that the blocks are very similar. I have no problem with a 302, but my grandpa has an '86 F150 with a 351w HO 4BBL that I could get running. Also, what kind of fuel economy would a 351w HO have in a 3000 pound Jeep? Thanks.

Dang, I expected it to be quite a bit better than a 5000-6000lb truck. Maybe I'll go with a 302 then. I've got time to decide, as I won't be able to afford it until the summer.

You can find the 302's with the factory roller cam set up at good prices these days . 25 free horsepower that doesn't get lost due to lifter friction .

If the jeep has reasonable gearing it should be a bit better than a full size truck, but not a whole lot.. a jeep has even worse aerodynamics than a pickup so being lighter only helps at lower speeds.

I was thinking I could put in a SBF and get more power, fuel efficientcy (above 15 city would be good) and it would be lighter if I chose the 302. Also, I want v8 sound. |
Upgrading the jeep from a 4L to a 5.7L is a big project!! You will be going from a Fuel injected system too a carb'ed system. Which isn't bad but if your doing any type of hill climbing or going down the hill's. But if your going too do it.
Are they both Standards or Automatics? Rad size? Are they both 4x4 version's? Things you will need too start looking for is motor mount, torque converter(flex plate with clutch), exhaust, converting from fuel injection to carb, fuel pump, custom oil pan, tranny linkage adjustment set, tranny mount converter, the pulley's unless your going to use the Alt and Power Steering pump from the 5.7L(351W). If you have a Auto 4 Speed OD You are USING a RE420 Tranny and well you will need too rebuild that and Add a Bigger Tranny Cooler.. I have a 95 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4L. I was looking at doing that too with a 302(5L) but Wow.. Having the Engine is about the Cheapest part. Too Do the Convert it I was looking at a part bill some like $5000-6000.00. Do yourself a Favor and get that Stroker 4.7 kit and add In a T3/4 Garret TurboCharger Kit, Custom Exhaust, Custom Intake, clean and polish the valves and head. It will be cheaper and it will give you more power with a lot less headache's. I hear you on the 4L power issue with the bigger tires. The Turbo will give you the power where you need it which is at the 2,000 Rpm too 5,000 RPM. If you do that 5.7L in there, you will be blow axles, gears, tranny, T-Case, Drive Shafts, and twist up your frame. |
