What rear end do I have in 98 expedition xlt
I am going to be doing some work on my rear end, I went under it to see if I could get any info to help my identify the rear end with no luck. I then looked at a parts mag. that shows most of the rear ends from Ford and others and my bolt pattern does not match up to what I though i had (8.8). I could not find the bolt pattern that I have, so is there anyone out there that can help.

maybe try looking up your axle code located on the driver door :confused:

...or on the tag under one of the axle cover bolts...

Here is the decoder ring once you find the code My bolt pattern matches up the the 9 but that actual rear end was not used unless i read some wrong info. |
9" rear axle = 1957/79 misc. FoMoCo Passenger Cars / 1957/82 F100, some 1983 F100 / 1966/82 Bronco, some 1983/86 Bronco / 1969/87 E100/150 / 1975/82 F150, some 1983/86 F150.
8.8" rear axle introduced in 1983. Some F100/150's & Bronco's could also have the 8.8 as it depended on the application. 1997/2001 Expedition could have either the 8.8" or 9.7" rear axle with or without Limited Slip. Post the AXLE code printed on the Certification Label. Posi, Positraction are GM terms. |
The posi term came attached to the link I posted, which is the result of someone else's search. Here is a decoder for the axle codes;
1998 Ford Expedition Used Rear Axle Assembly (Genuine OEM Quality) It looks like the 3.55 is a 8.8 |

1998 Ford Expedition Used Rear Axle Assembly (Genuine OEM Quality) It looks like the 3.55 is a 8.8 Only ratio listed for the 9.7 = 3.31-1. I go by Ford truck parts catalogs to decode this jazz. The aftermarket sector decoders could have errors and omissions. |

ok, thanks for the replies and help. Its nice to know what rear end i have, how is the 3.55 anyways, I mean where does it stand among other common ratios. I hear alot about a 4.10, 3.73 and a few others.

now knowing that my rear end is an 8.8 with a 3.55 ratio, what is the front axle assembly. I know being a 4x4, the ratio is the same, just curious on the name of this axle assembly as well.

Ummmm, 3.55 front axle. There are no size variants in the front.

Not really sure what you mean. There is no name for it other than 3.55 front axle. Name it whatever you like.
