surging problem

I have a surgeing problem. when driving and the truck and it starts lugging down I give it little gas and the turbo starts to spool and dumps on and off till i really give it throttle. only on light turbo boost and when the truck is lugging down. I think if the truck would just shift down a gear and not try to lugg way down this wouldnt be a problem. the truck also dumps boost under acceleration when shifting from 3rd to 4th gear sometimes. does anyone else have this problem and if so what need to be done to fix it. thx

Welcome to FTE! Best to take your baby back to the dealer for diagnostic and repair.

Let us know how it goes.

Mine has been doing it since July and 2800 miles. Ford has sent out a service engineer and verified the problem. A lot of them are doing it. Ford is working on a new calibration. I hope it is out in Jan.

What are your build dates?

thomastl 12-15-2011 07:13 AM

Mine is 04/11. My problems:
1. Boost drop out causing surging at low acceleration when starting up hill.
2. Low fuel economy on highway. Very eratic. One time 15 - next time 17 - next time 19.
3. Transmission hard shift sometimes (it is not often but sometimes it is there).
4. Trailer Sway Control dragging brakes at highway speed and causing low fuel economy (not always but I did verify once).

Calibration; would that be just a reflash or changing a mechanical part?

thomastl 12-15-2011 03:16 PM

New software/computer program is what they told me.

Where does one find the truck build date?

thomastl 12-18-2011 02:44 PM

I am not sure how you know when a new software mod is out. I know they will let me know on this problem and I will post here when it is out.

Build date is on the decal in the drivers door jam.

My 2012 w/1800 miles is doing this exact same thing.

mrcmbenton 02-03-2012 08:46 AM

Update on mine i replaced the turbo solenoid myself $27.00 and 5 mins and i have not had the surging problem so far. I had the kam cleard and pcm reprogrammed be fore i did the replacement and that didnt work. I was also noticing the turbos dropping boost between shift points more often and now hardly at all.

mrcmbenton 02-03-2012 08:49 AM

I still think ford needs a new shift program for these rigs i dont like how they lug way down before shifting

bluebird 02-03-2012 08:59 AM

Mrcmbenton, why didn't ford fix the solenoid for you?

I had a 250 diesel and a 5.4 and they both bogged. Both were 99's.
