460 timing boost

Well I finally got the problems worked out on my 94 460 engine swap. In celebration I was going to move up the timing a few degrees to try and push a little more out of the old horse. Is this a worth-while endeavor? Where should I move it to? Its a 460 bored .030 and has an rv cam and headers, stock intake with no horns. Also no pcv valve or smog pump. Any suggestions? Thanks for the help.

With the factory setting being 10 degrees some have had great results bumping it up to 12 to 16 degrees.. It is dependent on the particular engine and set up, I would try about 12 to start with and if all goes well go to 14 or so and see if it does ok there (as in no pinging)

The increase does help with power and some say it helps with mileage..

Will I notice the ping at a still idle or revving it or will it be driving under load?

the ping comes under load. full throttle, low rpm while in gear is the best way to check for it (if you have a manual). if it pings just back it off a hair. you can keep pushin it until it pings if you do it carefully, in small increments, testing between each adjustment.

if you have no pcv valve, did you add a breather?

I could only get 12* out of mine

I use this method with its time saving ease, and good results...ignore the carb talk, and don't forget the spout.

No, I just capped it off with a plate and plugged the header with a plumbing plug.

And slip ford, should i disconnect the spout or leave it on?

Not good...very corrosive gases, and pressure as well

I'm not sure but thinking/hoping hes talking about the EGR and not the PCV here?

94BigRed 11-29-2011 04:44 PM

I was mistaken, its not the pcv valve. Its the one that allows exhaust gasses into the intake to be recirculated. I thought that was the pcv valve, but its not. No the pcv is still there. Sorry about that. Yeah, Dan, EGR. Thanks.

You should never hear any pinging at idle or revving it. Ping, if any, would occur under load. That is why you have to experiment with what your combination will work with.
