need new pins on the orphan fridge door
i am wondering if anyone knows a hard way to replace the pins in the door hinge? i know the really, really hard way that actually destroys the hinge, and i have never seen new ones so i am gonna try to repin a pair i saved off the old parts truck. i have thought about puncturing a can of wd40 , putting it in a bowl and soaking them for a few weeks. also thought about soaking them in atf. i could just spray them everyday for a month or so but i would really like to submerge them in something so i can walk away from them for a few weeks. just trying to make it easier when i get them in the press. hopefully it wont destroy the hinge this time.

You can buy wd-40 in a gallon jug rather than popping an aerosol can open. Instead try a 50/50 mix diesel and atf, works good on loosening up rust.
Another option is Evapo-Rust. Will remove every last spec of rust, then you can repair and paint it easily. About $10 a bottle last time I bought some and it should be enough to do both hinges and more. Scott |
You could also try something like CLR. (calcium, lime, rust remover)

thanks for the ideas. now that you say wd40 in a gallon jug i remember seeing those. thats probably safer than busting open a can. i have never heard of diesel and atf, might try that first just to see how good it works. thanks again. i will probably wait for it to snow so i can drive it around without the doors to keep the neighbors on their toes.:-jammin

When all else fails add HEAT it can be your friend.... I ended up sawing top of pin and pushing/pounding downward since they were still on truck......

yea, im gonna soak them for a good long time and hopefully get them out without the heat. that will be option two. Bill, i assume those are new nos hinges and not just the pins, i might have to see what they want for them. also didnt know you could flip them right to left by taking out the pin. i did read that right didnt i?
