49 Mustang Gas tank install
 

Okay I have been reading the threads about installing the mustang gas tank in the rear frame rails. It appears to me that everyone is installing the tank inside the frame rails. My question is why inside the frame rails? I was looking at installing mine under the frame rails with a metal support. Am I missing something or would this work? My thought is atleast I could remove the tank easier in the future, don't have to remove the frame rail support and no frame rail modifications. Thoughts.....

The further that tank is from the ground the better.
You don't want your gas tank 3" from the ground, and It would look just silly.
anyone behind you would see the thing.

Also...would make it MUCH easier to steal the gas out of.

And, how often do you remove the gas tank?
The one in my truck hasn't been moved in 60 years.

If its ease of access you are after, place it in the bed. Safer, and easier to get to!

I have a 1950 F1 & I used the 1970 Mustang tank because
it carries a bit more capacity - 22 gallons. It's pretty deep - If you mount it under the frame it will stick down a lot. I don't think you want your gas tank to be the lowest part of the truck back there when you bottom out.
It's a good project - If you are looking for a twist on how it's installed - figure out how to easily get the gas into the tank from the side of the bed/fender. It can be a chore to fill the tank up through the bed
if you have load in there.

I installed a '70 Mustang tank below the frame rails on my '52 F1 initially. It hung too low and I didn't like the way it looked (never mind the safety issue). I then moved it inside the frame rails and I'm happy with it. It is more trouble to install and remove (if you ever have to) when it's inside the frame rails.

I installed a deck plate to allow access to the filler neck through the bed floor. I don't find it to be any trouble to put gas in it.
