2008 left/rear thump, at a loss.

Hey Guys,

I have a weird “thumping” noise coming from the rear drivers side wheel area.

It does it only when I hit a bump and seems to do it more when I am slowing down/breaking. The very odd time it goes from a loud single bump to almost a vibration. I have only heard it do this once, but my wife said it has done it a couple of times. The vibration only seems to do it while braking over a large bump, but again it is rare.

It sounds more like it is coming from the inside than the outside. I took the wheel off and checked suspension. I thought it might have been a loose shock mount, but everything is tight. I had my wife drive while I sat in the back, and it is almost like it is coming from the inside, but I have no idea what it could be. I might have thought it was the sub with a loose connection (is it in this area?) causing it to “thump”. When I had the tire off it appears the brakes are new (new pad and rotors)

It is not the access panel to the jack or the jack itself, as I removed them and it still did it. I also tighten the spare tire as I thought that might have been bouncing.

I’m at a loss.
Thanks everyone!

It could be the traction control. Mine does it mostly when turning over a bump at slow speed.

good call, never thought about that.

Now is this a normal sound? lol

The Thump is pretty loud. you can hear it over the radio.

Mine is loud enough. Whether or not it's normal--I'm not sure, but mine has been great so far. I don't know how loud your radio was at the time, so I can't comment on that.

Just curious do both you guys have the rear air suspension?

Matt

No, no air suspension

Did you check the spare tire? Might be loose.
Had that happen on a truck once. I felt real stupid after checking everything but that for the issue.

Hi Function,

I did check the spare tire. Unfortunately it did not solve it.

Radio was not really that loud. can still have a convo with the passenger.

as I was pooking around tonight trying to find the source, my son slammed the passenger door and I heard the thump in the rear. So I am leaning away from suspension. the more I think about it the more I am thinking sub with a short.

Is the sub in the rear drivers side under the window?

yes

the plastic moulding has a grille looking thing behind the drivers 3rd rear seat. that's the sub. I had my Expy for >1 yr before finding out I had one

Do you guys think it might be a loose body mount?

That is a possibility as well. Unless the body mount is visually bad, it's going to be very difficult to say it's the cause if the noise is not easily reproducable.
