How to: Clean EBPS to gain lost MPGs (Video)

If you have noticed a steady decline in MPGs, the first place you want to look is the Exhaust Back Pressure tube and sensor. Why here? Because its free and easy to fix if it is the problem, and quite often it is.

Another great job Trey, I have seen quite the response to your account through your various outlets!

good job reps
if only there was a cheaper pipe to use.

Matt, if one is good enough with the brake hardline pipe bender, i think it can be done along with the single/double flaring tool? Mcmaster-Carr has various tubing/wall thickness, along with "parameters" of its heat content..etc...just a thought.

How much MPG improvement have you seen doing this?

A/Ox4 11-15-2011 02:14 PM

I gained 1 mpg when I did it the first time.

Another on the to-do list.

that is a good idea and is cheaper than there $30 pipe.

Does a clogged tube or sensor cause the truck to run rough at idle? I have a theory that my engine is running rough due to the EBP sensor sending bad input to the EBPV, causing the EBPV to open and close erratically. I'm getting 15.5 mpg on the highway, so my EBP may be fine. Anyone have any input for me?

BTW, good vid I subscribed to your youtube channel.

I have not heard of that.. But anything is possible.
You can test the sensor with an AE or a SnapOn scanner. Or if you dont have one you can do it manually. The sensor sends out up to 5V depending on how much EBP it is seeing. If you test what voltage it is sending, you will know what its seeing as far as EBP.

P0470 = EBP sensor circuit malfunction
P0471 = EBP sensor circuit performance
P0472 = EBP sensor circuit low input
P0473 = EBP sensor circuit high input
P0478 = EBP excessive during normal driving

I saw that, thank you for the sub :-X22

Ok, my question then. I have my ebpv disconnected at the sensor on the turbo ped. It is still plausible that i've lost roughly 2mpg from a clogged or dirty ebpv even tho i have the sensor disconnected and inoperative. Would it be worth cleaning? Thanks
