Hard starts and white smoke

I have an 86 6.9 idi t19 4x4 regular cab that I recently saved from being crushed and other than my turn signal issue she is almost always a pain in the a$$ to start I know getting the glowplugs working would help alot but Saturday it was 60 f outside and it still wouldn't start without ether and while trying to start I can smell fuel! (after a few cranks) but it won't fire and when she does fire up she runs real good but under hard acceleration or hauling a load she puts out white smoke... Just enough I can smell it in the cab and see a little behind me... I am going to run diesel kleen through it but does anyone have any other suggestion for me to check till I get my glowplugs fixed?

I know you already made sure there was no leaks or air introusions right? caps and return lines? i would almost always blame air or bad IP on hard start. i guess you could throw in an epump to prime before start. i did but my trucks in pieces still lol!

Are you saying you get white smoke after she is warmed up? Lots of white smoke after starting with no GPs is normal but after operating temp, you shouldn't have any smoke.

I have white smoke at full operating temp when under a load like when I get into her she smokes a bit of white smoke.... As for the hard start I have an e pump and I check the schrader valve before cranking with e-pump on and before I got air and foam now all I get is fuel but she still won't start without ether

Forgot to say won't start without ether when cold but I'm talking like low 60's and won't start without it

Does the cold timing advance work? Pump timing could be off a hair and could have week injectors

Weak injectors and ip wouldn't surprise me at all

From what you have said, it looks like you need new GPs and or GP controller for the hard starting. Even if it were 100F outside, it will still start hard without GPs.

Next, you should look into return line leaks and possibly overhauling the injection system. You may just need to advance your timing a little to get rid of the smoke at operating temp. I guess that really depends on the condition of your IP and injectors.

What did you pay for the truck if you don't mind me asking?

$750 it has a decent flatbed on it and so far I have only spent $34 on things and that's only because I put led tailights on it and some bolts for the front bumper and I have looked at the return line system on the truck I don't see any fuel anywhere except when I push the schrader valve here soon the gp system will be on a push button just like my other truck. (that is sadly still waiting on engine rebuild) I decided to not transplant the motor from the flatbed so the other truck can have more done to it

YUP it don't matter how warm a day it is, it still takes working gp's to start the first time of the day, or anytime it has cooled down to outside temps.

I will be fixing that soon! Ran into a new issue though when I get into her then let off she seems to die.... Idk maybe low fuel we will see here soon though

It could be low fuel. When was the last time the fuel filter was changed?

Low fuel is why she died lol I got some fuel in her and she was better fuel filter needs changed I pulled it to see how low it was and it has something black at the bottom

As long as I remember, when my dad bought a used vehicle. He would stop at a lube shop on the way home, and have all fluids and filters changed, before he even got it home the first time. I have pretty much stuck to the same policy, except I generally bring it home and do it myself, including the rearends.

When I pull a fuel filter, I stick a new one back on, 6.9 filters are cheap compared to any component of the fuel system, and tolerances are tight in them.
