Lifter Size and Bore

I'm replacing the hyd roller lifters in my 302 and have noticed that I can get them in .874 diameter and .875 diameter. What is the stock size and what is the other size for?

You'd think this was a simple question but the searches I've done are confusing. Some places say the lifter is .875 diameter which implies that the actual bore (hole) in the block is larger.

I have also found posts that say the bore is .875 which would mean I would need the .874 lifter to get it to fit.

Thanks for your sage advice,
RP

That is just a 1/1000th of an inch difference, I can't imagine that will make a difference. The manufacturers must just list them funny. Just make sure the part is for the proper application.

By the way, I've never experienced a problem with my hydraulic lifters, are you just being thorough?

It's hard to beat the factory Ford lifter unless your looking for a lifter for a little more RPM. You can get a little more RPM out of the factory one by just putting less lifter pre load in it.

My chiltons manual lists the standard lifter diameter as 0.874".
0.875" diameter lifters are likely only used if the bores have to be rebored due to excessive wear.
