Gear shift linkage

Has anyone changed there gearshift indicator cable?
How hard to change or adjust is it?

I dont seem to have 1st gear and a couple of times Ive slipped out of park and it rolled away.

Once across Walmart parking lot narrowly missing 3 other trucks.

The indicator cable has nothing to do with what gear your actually in. The shifter linkage could be out of adjustment though, not putting the trans fully in park. I'm not sure on the exact adjustment procedure though.

EDIT: Here's how to adjust the shift linkage. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...djustment.html There's also a few links at the bottom on how to adjust the pointer and fix a sloppy shifter.

If the indicator/cable isnt moving far enough, would that not let it go into 1st when you pull it right down?

It is kinda tricky to get lined up correctly if you are not familiar with it, but easiest to place truck in a known gear and "align" everything to there, the first "adjustment" I would recommend you check is the torx screw under the dash here's a pic of them.

It shouldn't. The cable for it is the size of a paper clip and the setup is all plastic. It would give if you pulled too hard.
