My Build: 88 "Boss" Bronco

I was given a suggestion that I should start a build thread on my Bronco. So her I go. I bought it roughly 2 1/2 yrs ago. $1000.00 I paid for her with only 49k original miles, and a southern truck to boot(Im from SW MI)

1988 Bronco XLT 49,000 miles when purchased for $1000
351w, C6, BW 1356 manual t-case, Stock Ford Manual Hubs, Quad shock, H9 axle code(3.54 open front, 3.55 Traction-Lok rear) PO swapped to 4.09front, 4.10 rear with Traction-Lok...believe front is still an open diff.

Did run...kinda lol when I bought it. was not F.Ied anymore. PO "Attempted" a Carb conversion and failed miserably:-X19...I assume something went wrong in the system...and also prob why it sat for 3 years, cuz he couldnt get it running.

Had mismatched 32X11.50s on it. and also came with a free complimentry large baggie of 3yr old fossilized Mary-Jane;)

The day she was brought home

Carb and TFI under same hood??

Yes ladies and gents, if you were paying attention to the under hood pic. You would see that peeking out from under the Factory 351w 4v aircleaner is a TFI dizzy. The PCM was also still plugged in, as was both factory fuel pumps with no pressure regulator:-X19, the 600 4bbl sat on a adapter which was on a ford iron 2bbl intake. Timing was also 180 degrees out which me and my buddy found out when we were attempting to start it and it backfired out the carb and blew the emmisions fitting right off the manifold:-X04. I think the only smart thing the PO did was take to a shop for the AC to be retro-fitted and for the gear swap 3.55s to 4.10s.

What was done to get her running: Install ONE aftermarket inline low psi fuel pump.
Install a pressure regulator...set to 6psi
84 yr spec dizzy w/ Vac adv...timing advanced a couple degrees;)
Converted to DSII blue-tab module(def recommend Motorcraft only!!lol)
MSD cap, rotor, TFI coil
Rebuilt the carb and used a 1inch phenolic spacer
Weiand dualplace aluminum intake
A/C bypass pulley(compressor was about to implode)
install pipe plug in now vacant hole on right manifold.
---the Weiand intake and also a Flowmaster 80series 2.5in dumped b4 axle were added down the road a few months.--

Haha, sounds very familiar.

Last year I purchased an '84 Bronco with a 300 I6 in it. The P.O. had removed the stock 1bbl and swapped it out for a 4bbl intake and carburetor. The only problem was, the 1bbl was completely computer controlled and it had a TFI distributor, coil, etc. etc. It could get up to around 30mph, IF you were able to get it started. Usually it just backfired and blew all the vacuum caps off of every port on the engine. Big, slick bald, 33" mud tires. He got fed up with trying to get it to work so it sat for around 4 years, and then he sold it to me for a song. The vehicle had only 95k miles on it.

I towed it home, did a full Duraspark II ignition swap to it, with the vacuum advance, control module, etc, took the computer out, a lot like what it looks like you did, and revived it from the dead. A lot of fun!

Well done on your truck.

sharp looking truck, how bout some interior pictures, good job

Edgethis 10-12-2011 07:34 PM

Looks great. I always hate how POs seem to run these into the ground then let em sit for years before having a competent mechanic come along.

Interior

Well now that I think about it...Ive never really took any interior picks:-roll the dash is/was the only space inside that looks like 55k miles...the carpet and padding/sound insulation were long gone...replaceed with some cheap black carpet that wasnt even cut to fit:-X19...the bucket seat's armrests were ripped off and gone...also had matching sections that have been ripped/chewed to the seat frame. the bench looks good other than a deep hole dead center. Its the light grey interior...door panels are in good shape other than the sun fade on the top edges. Power locks and windows...had to replace both motors..they were toast. Found out that 92-96 window motors are the same...but wired backwards lol..so I had Mopar style windows lol: Down for Up, Up for Down:D...But I did flip the wiring to fix it. Ill get some interior pics up soon.

I did some subtle mods to my gauges...whatcha think?? Stock:

Walkaround Video

Ah, I do have a vid of her, A coldstart with a walkaround...and does show the interior. ---you'll notice that she has a good lope to her when she's cold and on full choke. I believe it was in part due to the fact at the time The dizzy's vac advance was not working properly. Which also made her very grouchy when cold, But it did sound cool I admit:-X06

And the Leaks start

Well on the first drive I had a front brake hose collapse, so replaced the hoses and figured since the price was right, replaced both calipers with brand new ones. And surprisingly the rear main started leaking...Took it to a shop, they pointed out that the crank was at the max for endplay, so the leak could return. and it did about a month later. never was bad, bout a quart every 600-700miles...And I drove about 190miles a week monday-friday, home, work and school. and at 10-10.5mpg..using premium...added up quick. replaced the radiator when a pinhole developed, then the steering box started. Well i figured since im going thru all this...might as well replace all the other steering components. New Steering box, Power steering lines and cooler. and steering linkage(draglink, tierods etc.).....

Boss351Bronco88 10-13-2011 08:50 AM

And then It Happened

Well got everything in, finally had nice tight steering. The day I was gonna take her in to the alignment shop i came home from work. I was gonna run in and change and go to the shop...So left her idling and as I was about to walk inthe house, i stopped and turned around...And oil was DUMPING from the front of the motor! I popped the hood to determine where the leak was coming from and it was the front cover seal and I also seen that the balancer was coming apart as well:(...after all that work. i was planning on tearing the motor down..but not until after winter...This happened last Dec...Which leads me to actual build part of this thread. I wanted to give some history on it before I went straight into the Build portion.

Drivetrain Removal

January is when me and my buddy pulled the engine and tranny in one shot...It was finally out around 1AM...and it was 10 degrees out. had to flatten the front tires to have enough space to pull it out. the Core support received a few dents, but I was gonna replace it anyway:-X22

Yea, I went Mudding before I did all the steering work:-jammin Def could use some bigger shoes:o

"Sleeper"

Of course I would like to and I will eventually lift it. But at this point there is only a couple inches clearance between the roof and the garage door. And I will not let it sit outside in the weather(plus I also have some unsavory neighbors). So the lift will be down the road. Plus I want to have something different from others. Ive seen 2wd coversions for Drag racing...SAS with 6 or more inches, lifted ttbs...Ive always loved the first muscle cars. The boats...love a stripped down Galaxie w/ a 406 or 427 Impala:-jammin...Cars you wouldnt expect to be fast. I seen the potential for power when I raced my buddy's 02 Sierra w/ the "310" 5.3. I was next to him til 70and I just pulled away until I let off when the needle reached the odo:-X06.

So this is the direction I am taking her in. Sleeper Muscle. Little chrome..Bumpers, mirrors, wheel well trim, window trim. Everything else will be blacked out in some way. I will be going with black steel wheels, the old style that every american car/truck had from the 50,60,70 and 80s. 15x8s...32X11.50 mud tires...I personally do not like the look of 33s stuffed under a stock Suspension. Chrome beauty rings and acorn lugnuts to finish the look. Headlight covers, taillight covers, I also have a hood scoop off a 69 Cougar Eliminator(Freebie) and it is a Real Ford part:-X22
That will be a later addition. Heres a couple things ive done so far.

Satin blacked the center of the hood and also the cowl...followed the Body lines. and blacked out the orginal grille

this is the style wheel I am going with...powdercoated black to match the truck

I do like the hood man. I always thought that kind of treatment would look cool on a white truck.

Boss351Bronco88 10-13-2011 11:56 AM

Thanks...Im surprised it came out as well as it did for a rattle can job at 1130 at nite. And being attacked by a fleet of June bugs did also didnt help. And I agree, it would look pretty BA on a white truck.:-X0A6
