Do you not know if you ran out of fuel? If not, that would be the first place to start. If it's not out of fuel, it is either the pump or a restriction in the lines somewhere. When you turn the key to the ON position (without cranking the engine) can you hear the fuel pump humming for about 10 seconds? Most make a little noise. It may help if you have a buddy lie under the truck and look at the pump while you turn the key on. It will be obvious if it is working when you turn the key on if you are looking at it. Typically these pumps either quit working all together, or work fine. Rarely any in-between. Let us know what you find and we will get you running again soon.

Yep. The fuel pump is also pretty good at pumping air as well. When the fuel supply is exhausted, it will suck air through the fuel line connector between the pump and the tank.

Like Bob said, the fuel pumps are good one day and dead the next. They usually don't function in a partial capacity.

You might try getting yourself a jug of diesel fuel and manually plumbing it to the back of your fuel pump (make sure you use an inline filter of some sort). Cycle the key about 3 times and then start the engine. If it starts and idles fine then you will probably need to drop your tank and clean the screens (or perform the in-tank mods).

This is a fairly common issue.
Here is a link.

You will probably find that the fuel pick up foot has deteriorated. It's become a more common problem as these trucks age. I did the in-tank mods about three years ago and didn't replace the pick up foot. :-banghead It will fall apart sooner or later.

Get the sand out of your eyes. There's a link right at the bottom of Greg's post #4.

86 f350 6.9 idi

i have a question on my 6.9 idi. The truck shakes when running and is getting harder to crank. I just replaced the fuel filter screw on type today and it looked like muddy water and smelt like old gas which is diesel ofcourse. Then tried starting after i refilled new filter with clean diesel and nothing even bled injectors and a few air bubbles came out. Still wont crank. I disconnected the mechanical lift pump from the fuel filter the hard line on the lift pump itself and turned engine over and nothing came out. I have 3/4 a tank of fuel atleast. Bad lift pump?????? Thanks in advance.

First, this thread is 5 years old, secondly you may want to put this in the appropriate forum for the year of your truck......

This forum is for the 99-03 powerstroke diesels, the fuel system on your truck is different to ours, we have electric rail mounted fuel pumps, whereas yours is a mechanical type.
