need help finding the right cam

Hi im new at this forum thing. But my problem is got to be my came its a good cam and its new but it would work best in a car its a high lift short duration I think it makes its power at high rpms I don't know the specs on it but I've got hardly any torque off the line but once I hit 3rd gear thats when the magic happens then its got gobs of power I've been clocked at 138 in a full size bronco but that's just it I want low end power not top end but hears my biggest problem I think my motor is a 82 5.0 ho none roller what cans can I use I tried to put a cam out of a 69 302 in it and it was 1/4 inch shorter than the Cam that is in the motor any help would be great and Thanks

research and more research.

have you called compcams to see what they recommend? you want something that builds torque as low as possible. something around 1500-1800rpms.

question what size tires are you running, what carb. still running stock exhaust? intake?
how many miles on the motor?

86fsbronco 11-24-2011 11:00 PM

No what's there number the intake is the stock high rise aluminum two barrel that. that came on 82 mustangs and the exhaust is true duel long tube headers. and glass pack the motor has little under 8000 miles on it since I rebuilt it and I'm running 31s with 3.55 gears oh the Carb is a motorcraft don't know wich one it is sorry it took me so long to get back but lost my internet for a wile thanx again

You want a towing/4x4 cam. every cam company makes one......a stock 302 HO cam would work well also.....lose the 2bbl and get a dual plane 4bbl intake and a edelbrock 600 cfm carb.

I can make you a deal on the right cam. It's a Comp XE250 grind, new other than being installed for about a week, never run, and removed. It's for a 351W so you'd have to change around the plug wires vs. a 302 grind but otherwise no worries. PM me if you're interested.

I just got a edlbrock rpm intake and I have 600 cfm edlbrock Carb will that work and the cam is a ho cam its got the 351w firing order

The Performer RPM is about the best dual plane intake out there, so yes it will work great. Pretty much any vacuum secondary carb will work fine for your engine. The one you've got should run well.

The HO cam is better than the other factory cam that might have come in 302s but any grind from Comp or Crower or Isky will run circles around it. All factory cams are a compromise between government-mandated fuel economy/emissions requirements and power.

Very true.....but you need to know what your are doing......any of the above listed are good.....but you need the tow, RV or 4x4 grind for low end grunt....nothing is worse than the wrong cam in the wrong application.....stock HO cams are good on a budget....the stock HO cams pull well throughout the entire RPM range.....and are very good driveability wise.

86fsbronco 11-27-2011 12:16 AM

Well its not a stock cam it has little to no low end grunt but at high rpms its got gobs of power I Just put my 33s on and it veary slow start but around 3000 rpms and up it drives like its got 25s on and is a vacuum secondary better than a edlrock I have access to a Holley 650 I'm trying to balance power and economy because I want power but I want to drive it every day I plan on eventually swapping a 351w but I have to rebuild it first this 302ho is my first engine build and I've learned a lot since I put the motor in I just don't want to give up on the 302ho if I swap it out I still want it to be right

njneer1 11-27-2011 10:39 AM

Use the edelbrock not the Holley.......

86fsbronco 12-13-2011 09:22 PM

Thanks guys but my problem was the Carb I put the edelbrock combo on I was wrong the intake is a performer but now I have good low end torque not the best but good enough for now and the top end power is way better I work at advance and my boss is trying to talk me into building a 408 stroker I think I might and put my 302 in my 2wd 66 f100 thanks for all the help

Kemicalburns 12-14-2011 09:51 AM

when building that 408 dont go following the mustang crowd to much ok. Most of there builds have Hi rpm power in mind. You wont need that at all. do your research, look for a 94+ year 5.8 motor with f4te stamped above where the starter would be on the block. this would be a roller cam motor. figure out what heads and intake to run then with that info call compcams to get the proper cam in that motor.

best of luck

What makes a roller cam better than a mechanical cam and I've changed my mind I'm going to stick with a 302 is roller that much better than mechanical Thanks again

Nighteyez 12-25-2011 10:11 PM

Roller cams offer less resistance, and last longer, and usually have a more aggressive profile.
