No brake lights

If this has been asked and answered I appologize for asking again. Don't get much time on my computer though.

99 E-350. No brake lights and can't shift from park. This should not be that complex of a circuit, but I'm at a complete loss of thought.

Thanks in advance for info.

A sticky switch above the brake pedal shaft?

I second that. Most automatics and manuals I've dealt with share 1 switch for the brake lights, cruise control cancel, and in automatics the shift safety interlock, or whatever it's called.

Did you check the fuse?

handyman82801 10-07-2011 03:07 PM

according to my dvm that switch is working ok. What else?

Which parts of the switch did you test. According to the diagram it is a two part switch. One part is brake lights, the other is other functions, including the shift interlock.

Not sure what the differance is but my switch only has 2 pins on it. I have since found that my 4 ways don't work either.
With 4 ways off my turn signals work. With 4 ways on they don't, I don't know if this is normal or not.

Are we talking about the same switch? It is where the brake pedal arm meets the brake master cylinder plunger under the dash.

Also are you sure you've checked all the fuses?

handyman82801 10-07-2011 05:51 PM

Same switch location mine only has 2 spade connectors on it. However I did find the problem.

It ended up being one of the fuses for the multi switch, had 12v on the brake pedal switch when depressed and still no brake lights, so I just started pulling fuses. Found one blown and replaced 4 ways started and brake lights also worked.

Thank you to all with answers.:-X03

Hmmm.....sounds like a bad ground somewhere.

Where is the best place to find a fuse block chart for this van? The cover of the fuse block was missing when I bought the van. Without a diagram it is a little difficult finding the problem.

Owner's manual. Go here Official Ford, Lincoln & Mercury Owner Site | Personalized Owner Information and look at the top of the page where it says "Vehicle Basics". There's a drop down menu there and you can select owner's manuals.
