'65 Econoline Oil Filter

Am I missing something? I purchased an oil filter for my van and promptly went home to do my oil change...

The FL1-A would not fit! I had to go buy a midget version...

And it was still too long. I ended up with an even shorter version (simply by holding different companies' offerings that claimed to be replacements for each other up next to each other until I found the shortest one) to get it to clear the frame. Is there something wrong with my drive train causing the oil filter to contact the frame or do these vans just need a really short filter?

hmmm... tried adding a pic...

I ended up with a "X" brand PLB-16, which has printed on the side that it's a replacement for a Fram PH-16, but it's actually a little shorter...

Anyway...

What size is the engine? 170 or 240 I-6? Both use the same FL-1A Motorcraft oil filter. Since the 170's oil filter threads directly into the block, it's gotta be a 240.

The reason the FL-1A will not fit: A previous owner installed a 1965/72 Galaxie/LTD 240 oil filter adapter (C5AZ-6881-A). It's not the same adapter as used on an Econoline 240 (C5TZ-6881-A).

Short FL-1A = FL-300 oil filter. Originally designed for use in 1975/78 Mustang II's w/a 302.

There wasn't enough space between the engine cross member and the oil filter adapter to use the FL-1A, because Ford shoehorned this engine into the engine bay.

Thank you sir. I'll check out the adapter at the next oil change.

Oh, and yes, it's a 240.
