Changing read end gears fron 355 to 410
:-jammin Hi everyone, I need some advice:-jammin:-jammin:-jammin I just finished rebuilding my 92 F-250 460 it's two drive and has a rebuild E4OD trans, with 355 gears, runs fantastic.. I am thinging of changing the rearend to 410 gears because I will be pulling my 6800 lb camper through the mountains out west and some or 9000 to 11000 feet. The motor is stock with .030 pistons, is this a good choice and it there anything I need to change on the tranny for the speedometer, also is the computer good to go as is???? I will change to whole rearend not just the gears.. Is that the way to go also????? I help and advice or welcome...:-jammin:-jammin:-jammin:-jammin Thaks Wade

Wade, a change to 4.10 gears would be a good choice. But you will want to be sure you are using the stock tire size. That 460 produces a lot of its power in the lower rpm band, so you dont want to get the RPMS too high, like you would on a v10. Towing at that high of an elevation might present some problems. I would focus on the truck being able to breathe well, perhaps at least a K+N flat filter to replace the OEM filter. Maybe someone else will chime in for ideas on towing at higher elevations. I would normally say a performance tuner if it wasnt an OBD1 vehicle. I don't think the tuners for these older trucks do much good at all. I would also install a transmission cooler and a transmission temp gauge to keep an eye on things while towing. These ford transmissions have some problems (prob why you had to rebuild) and you want to be nice to them. Also, changing all of your fluids to synthetic couldn't hurt.

Changing rear end gears will not affect your speedometer. I went from 3:31s to 4:10s and had no change at all. your speed is determined before the rear axle, changing things there will only affect how fast you get up to certain speeds. If you can find a full axle for cheap, id say go for it, its much easier and safer to go that route, as long as the new gears were installed by the factory. Ive run into problems w/ shops setting up gears that dont know what theyre doing.

I'm with Blue Rebel on this one. Changing the gear ratio will not affect a truck's speedometer that uses the VSS sensor on the rear end and a PSOM. The VSS is triggered by the tone ring on the ring gear. Changing the gear itself has no bearing on the number of pulses per mile from said tone ring. Tire diameter will, not gear ratio.
BTW...1992 was the first year Ford used the electronic speed/odometer. |
I stand corrected on the speedometer gear cable! I'm also with Blue Rebel on the comment with the rear end, changing out the whole rear end rather than trying to change the gears themselves is a better idea. Especially if you plan to do it yourself, not having the knowledge of how to set-up your gears would be disastrous. Although, if you wanted to install a locker or any kind of aftermarket differential, this would be the time to do it, but have a professional rebuild the rear end with the 4.10 gears and a selectable locker.

definatly 4.10's with a limited slip. what exhaust upgrades have you done? i would also focus on this part to better help that thing get over the mountains.

I would like to get the banks headers and stainless exhaust, but in the cards now, also the trans command by banks too... Ijust found out that the rearend is a 10.25 not 8.8 according to the tag on cover...Will the computer throw a code because of the rearend change???? Thanks everyone Wade

Why would a thicker cap on two sides make the cross weaker???
Are both sides 3 5/8" between the clips or bosses? if so, you're looking for a 1350-1330F conversion U-joint. Spicer 5-1313X Neapco 2-4953 Here's a handy table; http://www.drive-lines.com/ujs/uj_conversion.php |

Try NAPA or carquest for an oddball ujoint, the people at the discount places (Autozone, Advance...) usually have a hard time with anything that strays from factory... You gotta get the book out to find the right one.
