I have a question for consideration

For those of you who own these micro vans. I know that for a while the large E- series size vans were, still are, popular for conversion into campers. But, what do you all think of being able to convert one of these to a one person micro camper? In case you all curious I am not planning on converting one, nor do I own one. I am merely just wondering if we will start to see a new class of campers. If you think will happen who do you think they would be targeted for?

Smaller camper conversions are popular in Europe, but the biggest limitation I can see is that the Transit Connect has a total of 6 feet behind the front seats, which will barely accommodate a sleeping area for 1 or 2 people.

I have owned 4 full size vans (have had big vans continuously since 1986), the first two of them were Turtle Top camper conversions. Even a big van is a bit tight for 2 people if you bring *stuff* with you.

As a model for a small camper van, just look at the old VW van Westfalia conversions. They were really kind of cool, but again were very limited in terms of room for a couple people and *stuff*. They did do sleeping areas suspended inside the pop top, as did the Turtle Top vans (although we used the lower areas when we slept in ours.

The Transit Connect would be more viable with an extra foot or two added, and maybe some bunks suspended high off the floor, but would still be pretty tight.

Still, when my E150 gives it up, I will probably be looking at either a TC or some other minivan. I am leaning toward a longer minivan like a Dodge or Chrysler, as another priority of mine is being able to put a 4x8 sheet of something inside the van, on the floor.

That is an interesting question. I have recently upfitted 5 of the cargo versions of the TC for use in the Pest Control industry and the space is possiible for a light camping vehicle. I installed a bulkhead and two steel cabinets in the van and then a 50 gallon electric sprayer with a 100 foot hose reel on it. It was a very tight fit but I made it work. Then repeated the process 4 more times so it may be possible. Who knows if the demand is there someone will offer a supply for it.
