BED FLOORING
 

my 49 f3 has no floor in it what so ever. it's not going to be a show truck or anything just a build with what i got kinda truck. i was wandering what others have used for flooring on there trucks.

i have a bunch of that fake plastic wood (grey in color) was thinging on figuring something out with that. but its not long enough to run the whole length.
or i came across a bunch of road signs(in a house i cleaned out) thought it would be cool to use them but not sure on the legal aspect of that

I have personally used everything from old barn siding to pressure treated to diamond plate alum to birds eye maple. I even tried trex which is plastic decking (hated the stuff cause it was way to heavy). The beauty of these old trucks is that you can make some really cool stuff with just about anything. Couple of things though to keep in mind:

If you are using anything that is synthetic like trex, plastic decking material or most other plastics, they tend to warp over time worse than wood. They also have an expansion range different from wood.

Any wood can be sealed with paint, sealers, etc. I personally use Minwax Helmsman for my bare wood projects as it is a spar varnish. It is important with any varnish to make sure it has UV inhibitors and can expand/contract with heat/cooling cycles. I tend to stay away from polyurethanes because they tend to crack or yellow due to UV.

As for the legality of using road signs... hmmm. Reminds me of an old college buddy that had a railroad sign in his dorm room. Biggest problem was the sign had "Property of MDOT" engraved on the back. Since I am not a lawyer I would never want to instruct someone in the ways of the law. It probably would never be an issue but keep in mind even if you acquired them legally the mere fact they MAY have been misappropriated by someone else still makes them questionable. Google "theft by receiving stolen property" if you need some more clarification. Good luck and let us know what you end up doing.

If all you want is a basic, usable utilitarian-type floor, you can't go wrong with a nice piece of 3/4" 4x8 plywood.

Thanks, I got lucky on it. I have a buddy that works at a body shop. They had to replace the entire bed after the guy dropped his 5th wheel trailer and ruined the bed sides. I got the bed for free.

Well, I am about to rebuild the original wood deck Ford logo flatbed on my newly acquired '56 DRW F350. I will go with 2x10 PT southern pine. It will be a fun utility vehicle around my place and the hydraulic dump will make it practical. I'll stain the deck black to match the black steel on the bed and the sideboards.
