Do a search on the US bro's site.
I recall that on some trucks, if the 3rd brake light bulb blows, it results in the truck NOT going in O/D.

Geoff Kempe 09-19-2011 11:30 PM

What is the third brake light ?? the one on the cabin above the rear window?

ChunderDownUnder 09-20-2011 06:15 AM

yep thats it. is your O/D light flashing ?

Geoff Kempe 09-20-2011 05:28 PM

Hi Brian,

Yes the O/D light is flashing

ChunderDownUnder 09-22-2011 01:04 AM

Did you check that rear light ??
Is your speedo working normally ??
Is the tranny shifting normally from 1st to 3rd.
The flashing O/D light means a code has been stored.
Could be a anything from a bad speed sensor to a shot solenoid. Or even worse :-arrgh
Just reading some more and from what I gather it wont shift into O/D cause the computer has picked up the code. ( Like a safe mode). So the O/D might not be the problem.
Just adding here as I read.. Check #23 fuse under the dash. Check the VSS (speed sensor) on the top of the rear diff.

Worst case has been realised with the truck diagnosed by Auto Torque in Canberra
Damaged / burnt out over drive brake clutch in the trans requiring a rebuild to recify :'(

Truck throwing code DTC# P0783 - 3/4 shift malfunction

estimated cost $5 - $7 K depending if i want to put some trick bit sin it while it is apart ie::'(

low stall converter / upgraded shift kit and hydrolic tune to enable better shifts / upgraded trans cooler etc :D

Does this sound about right for cost to rebuild the 4r100 trans?

any advise / donations warmly welcomed :)

Geoff

I have a John Woods transmission (unbreakable) due from the States next month. Shipped to Sydney $6700. I had a m8 here in Sydney who blew he's tranny and it cost him 6K for a rebuild. So the price is about right. BUT if you can wait I would always go with a JW transmsission. You get a triple disc billet T/C, billet input shaft. Cyroed Intermediate shaft. Steel clutch plates with re machined teeth, JW valve body and other little re designs (there was a heap of other things but I couldnt keep track) that he has proven to improve longevity from years of building these things.
Or you could by my transmission that I will be pulling out of my truck.

ChunderDownUnder 09-27-2011 03:37 AM

hey Geoff.
How do they know its the O/D clutch. ??
Did they take the trans apart ??. Have they at least dropped the pan to see if there is any debris ???

That code could be several things. A short in the wires inside the steering column. A bad solenoid pack. Or the O/D clutch.

I would repost this in the 99-03 and see if Mark will chime in. Hate to see ya get ripped off m8.

How many k's on the transmission?

I'd be tempted to get either:
1) JW special transmission - shipped to Sydney for $6700 as Brian said above; or
2) PartsEdguy - Ford Heavy Duty stock transmission.

The upgraded transmission cooler is a simple upgrade you can do later. I'd also stick a temp gauge on the transmission so you can monitor the temp. On my recent trip to Batemans Bay I noticed the trans temp got to 70c coming up the Clyde.

ChunderDownUnder 10-01-2011 04:47 AM

Gone quiet hear, I assume you went with the rebuild ??

SSSimon 10-01-2011 04:55 AM

I got a failed PM from Geoff - I've now cleaned out the mail box.

If you jump on the the US FTE 1999-2003 forum, there's a Ford parts dealer there, Parts Guy Ed who sells all the genuine spares. One transmission option is a Ford Heavy Duty version for our trucks. Freighting one of those over and getting your local transmission shop to fit it would be a good solution. I think the transmission shop would be pretty happy doing it that way too as the Ford item comes with warranty.

See:
www.partsguyed.com

More specifically:

I guess you and the transmission shop need to decide if rebuilding over here is a cost effective option.
The replacement you'd need is the 7.3 4r100 - that's USD2,263.20 with a core price of USD1000. I'd guess the best option for Aussie customers is to pay the parts price + core price (as you won't be exchanging anything due to freight time/cost), so the stock rebuilt 4r100 trans is USD3263.20 + shipping to Canberra.

Shipping

G'day guys.

Just a thought on shipping. I've been thinking of getting a NV4500 5spd for my old girl.

I got in touch with a mob called California Speed Supplies. They're up on the Gold Coast. Craig, the boss, goes over to the US all the time buying stuff and loading up containers.

He quoted me $350 to ship one over and he would take care of paperwork etc.
Dam cheap I thought, all I have to do is get the trans delivered to his depot over there. I do know him fairly well, so maybe he's looking after me.

My thoughts were, you could approach a similar company wherever you are. What you are looking for is mobs that import cars and parts. Get the supplier to tie the trans on a pallet and and away you go.

Pity the AU$ has taken a nose dive, as I didn't have the readies to get one over when it was $1.10 US. I still haven't, but I'm hoping the $'s back up a bit by the time I have.

For what it's worth, the NV4500, (new version) is dam near unbreakabe and will set me back around $4,500 landed here, with bell-housing clutch and fork etc, to suit my 351. These things make TKO's look anemic.

It's about the only way I can get a O/D box that I can still tow in top gear with that will handle the weight as well as the grunt.

Oh yeah, it's 5.45 am here and I about to head off to the"All Ford day" at Kedron Sports Club. Gunna trot my "Efy" over and see how she goes.
Anyway, good luck. Hope ya get it sorted.

Cheers, Ron.

Speek to these guys. $150 for a transmission. They email you a SED form that you send to your supplier who fills out he's part and you fill out your side of it and thats it, Pretty basic info needed.

I would speek to John Woods first. $4900 was for the performance tranny. He also does basic Tow packages for less. He done us a deal on the core as well. You also need to remember that our transmissions are the PTO version as well. So they will need to build a PTO box.
