How to take apart a 8.8" 3.55 axle????

First time tearing into this. The passenger side seal blew and the outer wheel bearing burned up. Now I can grab the flange and wiggle it with 3/8" of slack.

Haven't opened it up yet but wanted to get some pointers. Is it the usual C clip affair? Do I need to remove the backing plate? etc? Any pics or anything would greatly help :o

Specs:
8.8" ring gear
3.55 ratio
Open diff
Drum brakes
Comes off 4.2L 2000 F-150 XL supercab

Yes, you have to remove the backing plate. Once you do, there will be a small bolt holding the crosspin in place. Be extremely careful with this bolt. It's very common for it to snap off and then you are in a world of hurt. Once you remove it, the crosspin will come right out and then both axles can be pushed inward to expose the c-clip. The clip comes out and the axle will slide right out.

"Backing plate". Yes, the cover comes off the back of the differential.

I think the OP was talking about the brake backing plate at the wheel. Not sure you have to pull that.
