Mustang gas tank dimensions?
After deciding to purchase a new gas tank for my 55, I've run into some confusing information regarding dimensions of the 69-70 Mustang tanks. Are they 30 1/4" wide, 32 5/8", or 35" wide like some of the sites indicate for their tanks.
Would someone who actually has one of these tanks mind telling me what they really are. I'm not sure why the dimensions vary from vendor to vendor. Thanks |
Drew,
Just went outside and measured my factory stock 1970 mustang tank for you; outside flange to outside flange 32 3/4" , actual tank width is 30". Hope this helps. |
By the way '70 is 22 gal and '69 is 20 gal, if you did not know.

Hey Drew,
There are plenty of installation pics on the mustang tank installation. Here is how my '70 tank sits out back. (I haven't installed the bed floor yet so I haven't tackled the finish out). Ben in Austin |

Hey JB,
My bed structure was all rotted out underneath - I could have ordered a replacement bed but I really wanted the Bed & Cab to be original to 1950 so we did a little re-engineering to stiffen it up a bit. Needed a big piece of metal between the rear of the truck & the tank as well as we aren't running any bumpers. I've seen some guys on here put armor in over the top of the tank as well. Ben |
Ben,
I figured as much, was just commenting on how it looked like it would be rather sturdy...not at all a bad thing, meant as a compliment. :-drink |

I had a 1971 Maverick tank already installed, which used straps to hold it in. It was a good fit, but when I realized that you couldn't buy a reproduction tank, I got to thinking (bad idea, I know) that if I ever had a problem with the tank I wouldn't be able to find a new replacement. Back in the 80's those tanks were not hard to find. http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/i...100Pics004.jpg The Maverick tank had some damage on the bottom that I thought might eventually cause some problems |
I'd be surprised that you couldn't find a repop tank from some of the mustang after market folks... something odd about that one ??

J,
Drew was saying he could not find the replacement Maverick tank, not the Mustang tank. |

Are you planning on running an electric pump, or the mechanical type ? And would you be concerned with slosh when you hit the accelerator hard with the feed in the front of the tank. It seems to me that the force would throw the fuel away from the flow.
