What color is it, was it, should it be, what color is that? (paint & upholstery, etc)

1948 F1
So I was installing my headliner and I noticed that the color behind the gas tank wasn't what I expected, and I thought some folks here would get a big laugh out of this:

Behind the gas tank it is red oxide primer.

Under the visor (drilled and tapped out the passenger which had never been installed) I found dark green, light green (looks like 50's seafoam), and finally Meadow Green (forestry service dark green).

In the door jamb under the catches (the catches were worn down to nothing so replaced) seafoam green, and Meadow Green.

Hinges (paint sacrificed to heat pound out the pins and add mirrors)
Dark Green, Flat Black, Dark Green, Red Oxide, Vermillion Red, Flat Black.

Gas filler neck (removed to install interior - paint so badly globbed on I had to wire brush it and restrike a clean coat). Exterior 2" - Dark Green, Flat Black, Dark Green, Tucson Tan, Red Oxide, Seafoam Green, Dark Green, Vermillion Red.... Interior 10" - Flat Black (2 layers).

I have a digger scratch the PO left me in 1 fender, underneath the Dark Green you can see Tucson Tan, under that Red Oxide.

Interior scraps of headliner found lodged behind gas tank - Puke Orange (multiple pieces, some more dark brown - possibly faded brown).

Seat, vinyl outtermost layer black (modern plasticy material), bottom layer (scraps left on sharp corners) more of a leather material Dark Brown for sides and back, Tucson Tan (or white - it was grungy) for seat top.

Feel free to post your own forensics, I'm sure lots will get a chuckle out of it. The only question I have is: weren't some parts universal to all colors and so painted flat black, i.e. gas filler neck & hinges?

And I thought mine was bad. :-X04

Exterior: Dark Blue metallic w/ grey sealer (from me), gray primer, bright pink in places (brushed on and later sanded down), green, large metal flaked dark blue, black and red oxide primer.

Interior dash: Dark metallic blue w/ grey sealer (me again), grey primer, black & red oxide primer.

Interior back and roof: Dark metallic blue w/ grey sealer (me again), Dark blue, dark purple, black & red oxide primer.

When I got the truck I called the man on the title (this was in 2001) and he informed me that he had put in a 352 and sold the "black" truck in the early 70s. So for 30 years the truck got passed along and painted without getting registered. :-roll

Did you find a production code on the firewall? That should tell you the original color.

48 had only 5 colors: black, green, gray, yellow and red.

When I rebuilt my 48 a few years back I took everything down to bare metal, then re-shot red oxide primer. In the future no one will be able to tell the original was meadow green.

When I started taking layers off I found meadow green, red, dark blue and finally royal blue mixed with aluminum barn paint that had been applied with a broom. Down-home version of metalic blue - it was pretty!

I'm pretty sure it was Meadow Green - both from forensics and the firewall stamp. The firewall stamp is quite legible even
7 KC 8G 6
which from research I am lead to understand is
7 - Meadow Green
KC - Kansas City
8G - July 8th birthday
6 .... least info on this one, but ?the 6th Stakebed - possibly a heavy half. (I have an extra rear leaf and secondary coils). Rear end was otherwise stock dana/spicer 41

Very interesting post. My truck was the same way but it is a mongrel of 5 or more trucks, no help there.

brain75 09-08-2011 04:45 PM

lets hear your color list if you don't mind - mongrel or not, this thread is about laughin with / at the misery... no real questions posed.
