Info and parts on an 1949 Dump Truck
 

My father has just bought a 1949 Ford Dump Truck. It needs the condenser and points, and the exterior rubber kit. So far, we're running into a virtual brick wall when looking up parts.

It is a 1-ton truck, which from what I found is an F4? Any information would be greatly appreciated. :-X22

Your picture shows a 42-47 truck. They weren't F-series, just went by weight rating - i.e. - one ton.

The frame looks like a one ton frame.

48-50 had horizontal grill bars where your's are vertical. Lots of other points too.
Your serial number will be something like 799T 123456 or 71HT 123456

Cool old truck, but you will probably have better luck finding parts for it if you look for the right stuff. Your truck is a 1942-47, not a '49. The body style changed in '48. The good news is the cab is a carryover from the 1940-41 trucks, so finding soft parts like exterior rubbers, window channel parts and weatherstripping will be easy, as they are readily available. Check with Bob Drake. Engine and ignition parts will be available locally from your neighborhood NAPA store.

After Googling an image of a '47, we could instantly see the difference.

For serial numbers, I found an article online stating about how the serial numbers were coded on the '49 - '51 ( 1949 - 1951 Ford Truck US Canad ). Would there be something similar for pre-'49 models? As mentioned the 799T and 71HT codes, guessing the 7 was year and T was Ton (like the F-Series), but as for the 99 and 1H, is there a way to tell the engine type (such as V6/V8, horsepower, etc)?

1942/47 1/2 tons (114" wheelbase) are known as Commercials, anything larger are just called Trucks.

The F Series was introduced in 1948.

Those are the engine codes - althought I screwed up. 47 had the G series 6 cylinder. 48 and later had the H series 6.

99 was the V8 designation. 1G was the 226 ci flat six designation.
