79 F150 rear window trim question
 

Hello,

Does anyone here have any idea how to install the rear window chrome trim? I spent 2 hours trying to figure it out and it appears to be tough sliding it into the groove of the window seal. I am sure there is some sort of tool or trick to it but I could not figure it out. Also do I start at the top middle section and work my way around? My kit came with to small connection clips. Not sure where the second clip be applied as the trim is one piece not two. Thanks guys

the extra clip is probably in case you lose the first....as for installing it id use some type of lube and id start at the top and work my way down one side then the other....

Thanks for the quick reply Model65! When you say lube do you mean some sort of grease? Do I need any type of tool to pry open the groove on the seal? Thanks

a lot of people use glass cleaner...that way it doesnt leave a residue....you can try that first

If it is the flexible type of chrome trim with rubber underneath, then you need what is called a lace tool in the autoglass industry. It fits around the chrome piece and then widens the rubber gasket so it will go in easily (it has a screwdriver type handle , if it is the true metal flat chrome that can bend and riun easily then i would recommend a hook tool in the auto glass industry or it is the same thing as a cotter pin puller, you lube the gasket with glass cleaner and slowly work it in side to side it can take some time. I used to install auto glass some time ago professionally. and i have done quite a few old fords and chevys. You can buy the tools from any auto glass supply house or i have seen them on lmc truck website. hope that helps. It just takes some time and practice. If you have any more questions let me know

Do you think the parts store carries the tool? By the way, the trim is the flexible one that can be bent. Would it be difficult to install without the tool applying the glass cleaner?

I don't think a regular parts store would have the lace tool. I do think you can order one from lmctruck.com or you could try an online autoglass supplier like crlaurence.com. you could still install it without the tool but i would recommend getting at least the cotter pin puller tool from sears (called a hook tool in the glass world same thing) it has a hooked edge that helps you pull open the tight rubber gasket, you need to lube with glass cleaner no matter which method you use. the lace tool does make the job go alot faster though. they do make diffrent size lace tools and they have a universal one that has a rotating head for diffrent sizes of chrome strip the clip connects the two pieces of chrome at the bottom of the window you should only need one of those. If you can find a lace tool it would make the job alot easier for you. Good luck
