Heavy towing
 

We recently inherited a 29ft trailer with a dry weight just under 7500lbs. I was thinking of getting a2008xlt 2 wheel drive. Does anyone have experience towing this much weight with an expedition? I am not worried about maintaining 60+ mph going up hills, that's what the slow lanes are for. Thinking expedition because it would be our second vehicle and probably tow ten to twelve times a year with it, trips under 200 miles. Thanks for any input.

Should be a good match. The 5.4 3v has a ton of torque and the 6speed transmission is pretty good

It wouldn't be alot of fun over a long trip, but a short 200-500 mile trip would be fine. I'd look into good tow mirrors though. A trailer that big will be a bear too see with the factory mirrors

Dry weight is pure fiction and you'll be lucky to keep the rig within the 9000 pound maximum towing capacity of the Expedition. That's with the HD tow option, all the standard version is rated to tow is 6000 pounds. Heavier radiator and transmission cooler in the HD package as well as full wiring.

If looking at used Expedition's, HD tow will advertise itself with a 4-pole "boat trailer" electrical hookup to the left of the hitch receiver AND a 7-pole round "travel trailer" connection to the right. The one on the right is vital.

Maximum towing capacity is computed with the Expedition empty (150 pound driver). You're gonna be at 8500 pounds easy.

My '07 XLT with HD tow pulls my 5000 travel trailer easily but I'm at least a ton and a half under what you'll be. The 6-speed is practically made for trailer towing.

I think you are going to be right at your max limit. I'd probably be looking for an F150. I think they are rated at 10000# towing capacity. I have towed my 20' enclosed trialer at its 7500# limit on both my Expedition and F250. Pulling it was no problem. The problem came in stopping the trailer. Even with trailer brakes I could feel it pushing the Expedition around pretty good. On my F250 I couldn't even tell I had a trailer back there.
