79' F250 4x4 progress thread

im labeling this a progress thread bc we all know projects rarely never truly become finished :-X06 anyway, i have owned 3 dents myself before my dad handed down this 79' that he has had since his senior year in high school. He always had the dream to restore this old truck that has had 30+ hard years of ranch duties but due to health problems he decided to give up and get something more turn key to play in the mud with. Ill be doing my own version of a restoration and the rig will see mostly street with light trail duty when done. I have always loved the 78/79's with square headlights and have owned a 73', 78' and a 79'. The 78' f250 2wd was my first vehicle. anywho ill get on with the progress we have done so far.

truck as it was when he retired it from duty in late winter of 2011:

as you can see its had a rough life. the original motor lasted past 420k until he got it rebuilt. i bet it doesn't have 10k miles on the 400 that has a small cam in it.

july 2011:

dad custom built this but i personally would rather have a regular box back on her :D

The parts truck:
79' f150 2wd 400 c6 a/c cab
pretty straight truck that came from Oklahoma

(the blue 79' in this pic he just sold sadly)

the progress will be slow as i will only be working on it two weekends a month due to part time school and a full time job :-drink

BIGT94z 08-08-2011 01:03 AM

after doing some research i think im going to use this on the frame, under the cab, and under the box

Chassis Restoration kit - Gloss

i would really like to convert it to a auto but i have read i cant use the the c6 that is in the 2wd? either way the auto gear selector on the column in cracked anyhow. i dont mind the 4 speed and might look into a 5 speed swap but it would be nice for the fiancee to be able to drive the rig if need be.

i cant wait to pull the cab off to be able to clean the frame ect. i might do some chassis exit headers since it would be easy to install? ill be swapping the a/c components over also along with all the sheet metal from the parts truck. the seats in both trucks are junk so ill go down that road when i get there. speaking of the seats. when i pulled the rig out of the shop to hose the frame off a mouse ran out from under the seat lol. i really dislike red so eventually the plan is black interior and all white exterior. i wont have any updates until the last week of august. thanks for looking!

I believe you can use the c6 as long as you get a divorced transfer case, but not 100% sure.

Where in MO are you,, St. Joe area here.

BIGT94z 08-08-2011 01:27 AM

thanks for the info. ill have to look into it!

i currently live in the belton area but my dad/truck are located in the stockton, mo area. ill keep the truck down there til its time for paint/body work :)

brian1080 08-08-2011 01:30 AM

cool. I'm in the middle of rebuilding my Scab, hopefully the frame comes back from the blaster tomorrow so I can get it painted. Mine doesn't have family history like yours, but I still like it. :)

Travis let me know if I can lend a hand or you need a part or too, you know I have a few setting around. lol

Would the ol highboy springs off the front of ol blue help out? I plan on a lift swap on it mid sept.

Just have to get off the road for a while, and it not be so hot.

In regards to converting to an automatic, the 2wd transmission would take some effort to make work. Your 79 should have a married transfer case, so a C6 from a 2wd will not work without changing the tailshaft housing. (A 2wd transmission will not work in a hiboy without just as much work, fwiw, but that's another story.) The difference in C6s (assuming common bellhousing pattern) is all in the output shaft and tailhousing, and the output shaft runs through most of the transmission. This makes it difficult to swap without taking the transmission almost all the way apart. If you intend to go through the 2wd transmission anyways, it shouldn't be difficult to find someone with the output shaft and transition housing. Otherwise, it usually isn't worth messing with unless you'll be in there anyways.

Since you need the married C6 setup, they are more plentiful and you should have no problem finding an inexpensive donor. Assuming you would like to keep a 351M or 400, any auto transmission from a 77-79 F150 4wd will work as well as any auto trans from a 77.5-79 F250 4wd.

I think the 78-79 steering columns are the same, 2wd vs. 4wd, so you should have all that you need for the correct column shifter.

I have two F150 4wd C6s in excellent condition that I can't give away for $100 each. I'm sure you can find something similar locally.

Hope that helps.

haha, wow that looks almost identical to my grandpas 76 highboy, down to the the big dent in the corner of the hood even. 25+ years of ranch work. Was his first new pickup, he had plans of restoring it at one point too, but sadly it just sits up on the hill now, a mobile packrat nest.

thanks for the clarification! i figured the the columns would interchange. looks like the cheapest route would be to buy a parts truck in the future to do the swap. for now ill just stay with the 4 speed. again thanks for the info it will come in handy for the future

Travis I happen to still have the C-6/NP-205 that was hooked to ol reds new 351M, its actually still in the parts bronco? I test drove the parts Bronco in 2wd and 4wd before I bought it.

BIGT94z 08-17-2011 08:42 PM

Shoot me a pm/email about a price rich!

http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/o...8-27152259.jpg

got all the rear tank stuff out of ole besty and the front bumper off. 32 yr old bolts suck. we took the torches to the bumper bolts lol

Also i bought a 79' bronco with a 6in suspension & 3in body lift on 36's that has a bad engine. ill put the engine out of the parts truck in it. It should make a great mud/trail toy and winter beater for the fiancee with the c6/np205
